SnoopyHello!
Was wondering if I could find a little help with a new Tiki Wiki installation here.
[03:13]
***dabright has joined #tikiwiki [03:15]
fabriciusHi Snoopy
more or less coinsidently still awake
what's the problem? hope I could help
but heading off soon
[03:16]
SnoopyI've made the install and got things set up, but it doesn't look like I have a new user registration option on my main page. http://famdamily.info [03:17]
fabriciusI see a link "register" [03:19]
Snoopy*facepalm* The theme just wasn't rendering right in my browser and I missed it.
I.
Am.
An idiot.
[03:20]
fabriciusPowered by Elgg, the leading open source social networking platform [03:20]
SnoopyAh... That's not right... [03:20]
fabriciusthat doesn't seem to be Tiki ;-) [03:20]
SnoopyDNS lag. [03:20]
fabriciusahh [03:21]
SnoopyI've been playing fast and loose with changes today. :) [03:21]
fabriciusok - have another link? [03:21]
Snoopyhttp://205.196.219.105 ? [03:22]
fabriciusjust in case: did you activate the "users can register" ? [03:22]
SnoopyYeah. And I found my missing link. :) [03:22]
fabriciushttp://205.196.219.105/tiki-register.php -> it seems to be a css problem [03:23]
SnoopyI think I just need to change to a better theme. [03:23]
fabriciusthe "forgot my password" overlaps the register link
or you customise the theme, if you like it generally
[03:24]
SnoopyThat would require knowledge of CSS which I don't (yet) have. [03:24]
fabriciuscustomizing themes in Tiki is quite easy - at least the basic stuff
you do nothave any knowledge, or no advanced knowledge?
did you ever used css in html?
[03:25]
SnoopyEffectively none. [03:25]
fabriciusok [03:25]
SnoopyI can just about spell CSS. :) [03:26]

fabriciusdid buy a book "CSS for kids" late december [03:26]
SnoopyI take it you recommend it? [03:27]
fabriciusfor kids and for adults who want a really basic beginners guide
yes definitely
[03:27]
SnoopyCool. I'll look it up. I've also got a few friends who rank intermediate - expert on CSS knowledge. [03:28]
fabriciusI would not dare to tell me designer and I could not develop a theme from scratch, butnot so bad to do basic adjustments [03:28]
Snoopy*nod* [03:28]
fabriciushmmm - I bought it in german .. do not actually know, if theres an english version of it [03:28]
SnoopyWell, I'm sure there's something out there for beginners in English. [03:29]
fabriciusif you want to see: http://papatour.eu - that's what I could make out of a fivealive standart theme, some weeks after my first steps
I'd say Tiki is very good for starting with CMS-CSS work
[03:30]
***dabright has joined #tikiwiki [03:30]
fabriciusmeans CSS templating [03:30]
SnoopyNot bad! [03:31]
fabriciusthx
tomorrow site will change again, as we start the tour on tomorrow
but that will not be CSS changes, but just different content design
[03:31]
SnoopyGroovy. [03:32]
fabriciusless culomns, a wide random picture or slideshow on top of most pages (depending on the day / station where we attend ...
already prepared, but still need some adjustments
steep learningcurve in Tiki
do you know Tiki longer, or just beginning / interested?
since a while I am thinking about writing a little beginners guide for CSS-Themes
[03:33]
SnoopyJust starting out. Trying to find something that will make a good social network platform / facebook replacement for my group of friends. [03:35]
fabriciusespecially for tiki
In css I see a bit of a lack regarding to what I was looking for at my start with theme customizing
[03:35]
SnoopyI don't actually think I'm going to get that involved in the CSS, but let someone who knows it already poke at it if they're interested. [03:37]
fabriciusbut the community is very helpful - thought some of the devs save my arse a couple of time (beeing under some pressure in a project)
some basics you should know - makes live easier - at least when you roughly understand what goes on, if you're bugtracking
some basics like what is a margin or padding and how a css file looks like
[03:38]
Snoopy*nod* [03:39]
fabriciusno need to research every selector by yourself, if you have somebody to do the ha for youcking [03:40]
SnoopyYup. [03:40]
fabriciusbut not such difficult
just a mess sometimes and on some point timeconsuming, if you go to the details
so your question is sorted so far?
[03:40]
SnoopyCompletely. Thanks.
Still feel like a dumkopf for missing the obvious... :)
[03:42]
fabriciusand you are researching wich software for a certain project [03:43]
SnoopySo far, Elgg, Dolphin, Diaspora, StatusNet, Tiki and one other I forgot the name of.
Tiki's the best-looking one yet.
[03:44]
fabriciusoh don'task me, how often I waste hours, sometimes days just because of a simple checkbox ... but it's not really wasted time - more gaining experience [03:45]
SnoopyYup. Such is the nature of testing... [03:45]
fabriciusDiaspora seems a different building, isn't it?
what you want to do with the software?
we have "friendship network" as feature, but it seems to be more a debrecated feature - faced out and not actively developed
[03:45]
SnoopyDiaspora is very Facebook-like, but it's in Alpha, buggy, and hard to install and make work.
I want something with, yes, a friends network, groups and status updates.
Facebook would be just fine, but I want to bring it under my control for my friends so that we can share information without worrying about Facebook or Google's privacy policies.
[03:47]
fabriciusI regret that the friendship network thing is not so much a killer in Tiki - but in the end the groupware stuff is more important for most of us ... and we all have to accept aswell, where the actual coders see their personal priorities [03:48]
SnoopyYup. [03:49]
fabricius> I want something with, yes, a friends network, groups and status updates. <- may become a bit difficult in Tiki, as I guess that will not be developed further - not in assessable time [03:50]
Snoopy*shrug* I'll see if this will work, if not, I'll look to something else... [03:51]
fabriciusyou should ask Marc or ... check the feature requests, write a forum posts ...
Tiki is a very very good tol for nearly everythingI can imagine ... aswell you will always find usecases with very specific requirement
what els you would like / need apart from status updates?
else
[03:51]
SnoopyPhoto galleries
And groups, but I can probably use forums for that.
[03:53]
fabriciusperfect - we have image galleries, but since a while not necessary anymore, cause 'file galleries' have been further developed and take that aswell
groups - tiki is very good in that
and rights management, if you need that
if you need groups, where people cansubscribe bythemselves or moderated groups ... and categories
ever heard about workspaces?
literally a combination of groups, categories and perspectives
[03:55]
SnoopyUsers can create their own dynamically? [03:57]
fabriciusI did not yet set this up, but yes, that's definitively possiple - called 'organic groups' [03:58]
SnoopyCool! [03:59]
fabriciusquite new feature, as I ... guess since 4.x or 5.x - I will have to look into that quite soon
so many features - you need times and times and still there is stuff left to learn about
you said forums ... just one of the basic features
[03:59]
SnoopyYup. [04:00]
fabriciuswhat I find as very cool with Tiki, is that you have the WIKI-Syntax all over the place and every feature is tight integrated [04:01]
SnoopyI'm seeing that... [04:01]
fabriciusdifferent from extension-model-based CMSes like Typo3, where for ex. the wiki extension does not work together with the rights managemant
and there is the WYSIWYG aswell, based on the CKE Project
[04:02]
***CIA-77 has quit IRC (Read error: Operation timed out) [04:03]
fabriciusMost of the features support WYSIWYG aswell - as it still is under work of even better integration
you should nor switch between WYSIWYG and WIKI-Syntax on the same existing page (itś still possible to convert) but you can freely decide, in wich page you prefer the one or the other editor/syntax
[04:03]
SnoopyThanks for the advice. I should be getting to sleep soon. [04:06]

Does anybody else wrestle with wiki paragraph formatting every few tiki releases?
[12:27]
sylviegchibaguy: yes
the settings changed...
[12:30]
chibaguyI was surprised this time to find a </div><br /><div> gets produced in html by </div><p>&nbsp;</p></div>
So if paragraphs of text have a bottom margin for nice spacing, a plain new line becomes one line height plus the paragraph bottom margin height, ending up too much white space.
[12:30]
sylviegchange the 2 setting about wiki formatting - and .. one setting will work [12:32]
chibaguyHi sylvieg.
I can't find a setting that actually does what I want.
[12:33]
***lphuberdeau has joined #tikiwiki [12:35]
chibaguyThe problem is that empty lines are rendered as paragraphs.
which seems like an ugly hack to me.
ah, I see the problem (for me). ::Centered text:: is produced as a div with text-align: center. Then when I make an empty line it is is produced as a pragraph (and gets the standard (in my theme) 24px bottom margin.
So all my consecutive lines of centered text are separated by 24px + 1 text line height (for the &nbsp; inside the paragraph).
Plain lines of wikitext have <br> tags as expected (although they should be <br /> syntax).
I guess I shouldn't use :: ::.
[12:35]
sylviegin admin->textarea - there is these 2 chackboxes .. wiki oparagraph - but still .... one config will suppress the br [12:43]
chibaguyYes, I can suppress the br, but I was getting a paragraph inserted between consecutive lines of centered text. I wasn't trying to make paragraphs. [12:44]
***jonnyb has joined #tikiwiki [12:45]

::line one::
::line two::
with no extra space between the lines.
It doesn't seem possible anymore with just wiki syntax.

oh my superbuckets, its raining out there!! First offer and I have to come up with a 24 pdf file solution. anyways... i guess the Agent will have to be happy with a jump drive with pdfs. <sigh> I'll keep trying of course, but right now the webpage thingy will have to wait. [19:40]

Well, I've tried a gazzillion things to get userAgent to view the files he/she needs to download/view. tiki_p_download is checked. so is tiki_p_view_file_gallery... so i just don't get why no records are found. I'm missing something somewhere. I guess I'm going to make 24 + 2 agms .doc files into tiki pages. Wish me luck. ;) [20:05]
