Hello!
Was wondering if I could find a little help with a new Tiki Wiki installation here.
Hi Snoopy
more or less coinsidently still awake
what's the problem? hope I could help
but heading off soon
I've made the install and got things set up, but it doesn't look like I have a new user registration option on my main page. http://famdamily.info
I see a link "register"
*facepalm* The theme just wasn't rendering right in my browser and I missed it.
I.
Am.
An idiot.
Powered by Elgg, the leading open source social networking platform
Ah... That's not right...
that doesn't seem to be Tiki ;-)
DNS lag.
ahh
I've been playing fast and loose with changes today. :)
ok - have another link?
http://205.196.219.105 ?
just in case: did you activate the "users can register" ?
Yeah. And I found my missing link. :)
http://205.196.219.105/tiki-register.php -> it seems to be a css problem
I think I just need to change to a better theme.
the "forgot my password" overlaps the register link
or you customise the theme, if you like it generally
That would require knowledge of CSS which I don't (yet) have.
customizing themes in Tiki is quite easy - at least the basic stuff
you do nothave any knowledge, or no advanced knowledge?
did you ever used css in html?
Effectively none.
ok
I can just about spell CSS. :)
harr harrr
same with me only a couple of month ago
did buy a book "CSS for kids" late december
I take it you recommend it?
for kids and for adults who want a really basic beginners guide
yes definitely
Cool. I'll look it up. I've also got a few friends who rank intermediate - expert on CSS knowledge.
I would not dare to tell me designer and I could not develop a theme from scratch, butnot so bad to do basic adjustments
*nod*
hmmm - I bought it in german .. do not actually know, if theres an english version of it
Well, I'm sure there's something out there for beginners in English.
if you want to see: http://papatour.eu - that's what I could make out of a fivealive standart theme, some weeks after my first steps
I'd say Tiki is very good for starting with CMS-CSS work
means CSS templating
Not bad!
thx
tomorrow site will change again, as we start the tour on tomorrow
but that will not be CSS changes, but just different content design
Groovy.
less culomns, a wide random picture or slideshow on top of most pages (depending on the day / station where we attend ...
already prepared, but still need some adjustments
steep learningcurve in Tiki
do you know Tiki longer, or just beginning / interested?
since a while I am thinking about writing a little beginners guide for CSS-Themes
Just starting out. Trying to find something that will make a good social network platform / facebook replacement for my group of friends.
especially for tiki
In css I see a bit of a lack regarding to what I was looking for at my start with theme customizing
I don't actually think I'm going to get that involved in the CSS, but let someone who knows it already poke at it if they're interested.
but the community is very helpful - thought some of the devs save my arse a couple of time (beeing under some pressure in a project)
some basics you should know - makes live easier - at least when you roughly understand what goes on, if you're bugtracking
some basics like what is a margin or padding and how a css file looks like
*nod*
no need to research every selector by yourself, if you have somebody to do the ha for youcking
Yup.
but not such difficult
just a mess sometimes and on some point timeconsuming, if you go to the details
so your question is sorted so far?
Completely. Thanks.
Still feel like a dumkopf for missing the obvious... :)
and you are researching wich software for a certain project
So far, Elgg, Dolphin, Diaspora, StatusNet, Tiki and one other I forgot the name of.
Tiki's the best-looking one yet.
oh don'task me, how often I waste hours, sometimes days just because of a simple checkbox ... but it's not really wasted time - more gaining experience
Yup. Such is the nature of testing...
Diaspora seems a different building, isn't it?
what you want to do with the software?
we have "friendship network" as feature, but it seems to be more a debrecated feature - faced out and not actively developed
Diaspora is very Facebook-like, but it's in Alpha, buggy, and hard to install and make work.
I want something with, yes, a friends network, groups and status updates.
Facebook would be just fine, but I want to bring it under my control for my friends so that we can share information without worrying about Facebook or Google's privacy policies.
I regret that the friendship network thing is not so much a killer in Tiki - but in the end the groupware stuff is more important for most of us ... and we all have to accept aswell, where the actual coders see their personal priorities
Yup.
> I want something with, yes, a friends network, groups and status updates. <- may become a bit difficult in Tiki, as I guess that will not be developed further - not in assessable time
*shrug* I'll see if this will work, if not, I'll look to something else...
you should ask Marc or ... check the feature requests, write a forum posts ...
Tiki is a very very good tol for nearly everythingI can imagine ... aswell you will always find usecases with very specific requirement
what els you would like / need apart from status updates?
else
Photo galleries
And groups, but I can probably use forums for that.
perfect - we have image galleries, but since a while not necessary anymore, cause 'file galleries' have been further developed and take that aswell
groups - tiki is very good in that
and rights management, if you need that
if you need groups, where people cansubscribe bythemselves or moderated groups ... and categories
ever heard about workspaces?
literally a combination of groups, categories and perspectives
Users can create their own dynamically?
I did not yet set this up, but yes, that's definitively possiple - called 'organic groups'
Cool!
quite new feature, as I ... guess since 4.x or 5.x - I will have to look into that quite soon
so many features - you need times and times and still there is stuff left to learn about
you said forums ... just one of the basic features
Yup.
what I find as very cool with Tiki, is that you have the WIKI-Syntax all over the place and every feature is tight integrated
I'm seeing that...
different from extension-model-based CMSes like Typo3, where for ex. the wiki extension does not work together with the rights managemant
and there is the WYSIWYG aswell, based on the CKE Project
Most of the features support WYSIWYG aswell - as it still is under work of even better integration
you should nor switch between WYSIWYG and WIKI-Syntax on the same existing page (itś still possible to convert) but you can freely decide, in wich page you prefer the one or the other editor/syntax
Thanks for the advice. I should be getting to sleep soon.
NP
me too
G'night!

@ jonnyb getting closer now - nearly 100% ... so it's not entirely unlike notcoming, but once you will not forget your towel you'll make it there finally
indeed - going to book a ferry crossing soon, then there's no going back! :)
but have client calling soon - need to finish something (there's always something!)
want clients aswell :-D
still just in voluntary projects
no clients - no ferry (or diesel!) ;)
will be hard without ferry but with diesel ... would need some empty barrels and a good rope
actually not a tiki client - dealing with a horrid huge expensive closed source web app (would be so much easier if i could see the code!)
and strong arms for 35 km paddling
or pedals
oh yes pedals
will have to seal your car carefully
and need strong legs
perhabs ferry is better
:-D

sylvieg? your commit 34939 fixes indeed that issue with receiving structures from tikis (bug 3911)
and same applies to tiki7, and to proposals/6x
I'll commit your fix to 7 and proposals/6.x even if it implies a db change, since that db change fixes a bug

Does anybody else wrestle with wiki paragraph formatting every few tiki releases?
chibaguy: yes
the settings changed...
I was surprised this time to find a
So if paragraphs of text have a bottom margin for nice spacing, a plain new line becomes one line height plus the paragraph bottom margin height, ending up too much white space. change the 2 setting about wiki formatting - and .. one setting will work Hi sylvieg. I can't find a setting that actually does what I want. The problem is that empty lines are rendered as paragraphs. which seems like an ugly hack to me. ah, I see the problem (for me). ::Centered text:: is produced as a div with text-align: center. Then when I make an empty line it is is produced as a pragraph (and gets the standard (in my theme) 24px bottom margin. So all my consecutive lines of centered text are separated by 24px + 1 text line height (for the inside the paragraph). Plain lines of wikitext have
