TNRR2012: tiki 6.3: i use tiki primarily for the google maps and trackers. is it in my best interests to set up tiki 7? i mean are there any major advances pertaining to these areas in 7? thanx and i really LOVE ya'lls software!
kstingel: will TikiWiki work effectively if installed in a subdirectory? eg http://www.mydomain.com/tiki My planned usage of Tiki is to provide a collaboration community for Game guides, later I will be developing games, but for now it's just the games my users currently play online
TNRR2012: if u mean will it work like in www.abc.com/tikiname then yes. i do that and have the link to mine from my blog
i have no issues at all
kstingel: thanks, for the moment (as I learn tiki) I have index.php redirecting straight to tiki/tiki-index.php, so that I can keep the site layout reasonable tidy and later add new folders to contain the games we cover ...
lphuberdeau: TNRR2012: There are significant changes regarding maps in Tiki7, but now mostly based on openstreetmap rather than google maps (which tends to switch terms of use too much)
kstingel: I'm thinking along the lines of /game1/index.php redirecting into /tiki and connecting to tiki-group = game1 (but I haven't figured out how yet)
TNRR2012: man, i've been with tiki since the 3.x days and love it. i've coded up mediawiki as well but tiki is FAR superior in my opinion based upon the permissions setup
@lphuberdeau: thanx!
ill read up on them as i may take the plunge
kstingel: at this point I'm not using the maps feature
TNRR2012: can u elaborate a bit maybe i can help
i mean are u trying to migrate a data structure into tiki?
kstingel: I've setup a site for my gaming alliance, we play a couple of online games together ... to assist new players we invite to the games we play (and the ones I will develop later) I want to provide the community contribution abilities of tiki to my users ....
TNRR2012: @lph: i really am a big supporter/fan of openstreetmap so i may look thru it
kstingel: at this time it is a new domain, with just tiki installed (hence the redirect straight into tiki)
TNRR2012: so really what you want to do is have a front end and the ability to link direct into tiki?
see the REALLY neat thing is this: say you have members, nonmembers and then like contributors. well, members can see all and nonmembers can see some and maybe contribute and contributors can do some of each. what i mean is u can set permissions for anything under the sun unlike mediawiki (wikipedia's software)
kstingel: the problem I'm trying to overcome is that most online games that provide an Alliance space, periodically cleanup that space, so any tips and team assistance we add needs to be re-added ... I'm hoping to provide a perpetual help system, where hints and tips can be archived so that it's all there for newer players
TNRR2012: r u in the states?
kstingel: australia
TNRR2012: ah. would've given u a ring and ran down what i did. i tell u these folks in here, by in large, taught me everything! we attended a tiki fest back in the 3.x days and pushed for the google maps integration and they came thru! so it's a really good community
i run a hobo/railroad community here in the US and we use tiki to compile railroad info amongst other things
kstingel: eventually, some of my current gaming team will become the testers for my developed games and so I want the feedback options provided in tiki so that I can setup my dev groups and testgroup for each game
TNRR2012: here is an example of what i did if it helps. http://foreclosurepedia.org/blog u will see that i used the free wordpress blog as a front end and at the top i have links. the ones now are MW types for work i am doing but you get the point as any link can be say to your tiki or you could inline link the tiki
and tiki is FREEEEEEEE! that's the truly great thing I feel!
kstingel: if I can get my site outline sorted, I'm planning on offering it as a profile .... initially I'm working on a generic "discuss existing, collaborate on new" type setup ... that way it's not specifically geared to games development
TNRR2012: yeah see u could use tiki for your data sets (semantic and otherwise) fill in the blank forms (trackers) to compile gaming data and then set up a bug type feature (tracker) for collaberation
kstingel: that's one of the primary reasons I chose it ... no overhead for those I work with
TNRR2012: there is a great guy on here (many are great really) named luciash. he did coding for pay for me way back when. also a really nice fellow named laporte was invaluable in answering questions for us at tikifest
i will help u if i can if u send a rough outline to me: president@foreclosurepedia.org really, though, i am a consumer of the product as opposed to a coder.
as to the overhead yeah that is a BIG reason. and the security for it (permissions structure) is fairly bullet proof. and the folks are really on top of the game. i guess u wandered over to the forums/wiki?
kstingel: how does "multitiki" work? ... I assume that I can have a single install and have www.my.com and www.myother.com both using tiki, but do they share the DB, or each have their own?
I've had a quick look. but I'm still working my way thru Tiki for Smarties at this point
TNRR2012: great site tthere! man, it's helped me out a bunch! as to the site outline read up on the collaborative community setup. that's what we use.
kstingel: which brings to mind another confusing issue ... reading thru http://dev.tiki.org/Hello+World there are code boxes that have "<h1>{$user|escape}</h1>" and such ...
does that mean rather than using < in my code I use < or is that just the wat tiki prints out the code for display?
tightwork: Hmm, structures make wiki a lot more work than toc's from headings :-/
TNRR2012: modern tiki, as we use it anyway, requires almost NO coding. example:
using the trackers to display massive info on a wiki page is all done by click and drag except the displaying of the tracker. i hope this will become automatged as well
like member name, address, etc or game, rating, etc can all be entered on a form and displayed elsewhere
then it can be semantically tracked throughout the wiki
tightwork: displaying the tracker is somewhat automagic from the help menu.. the syntax can be created from there also
kstingel: if I'm using mysite/tiki, won't I need to code some stuff to enable tiki linkage though? ... or is that simply done by including tiki-setup.php?
TNRR2012: at tikifest in 3.x we really pushed for this and whether it was us or not it came about
u mean like i did on my blo9g?
i guess it all depends on what ur front end is going to be
like in WP i simply added it as a link in the link/header section
kstingel: overall, tiki is a component of my site, not the main frontend ... but I want to have registration and group management handled via tiki so I can use tiki features later as I learn how
TNRR2012: there is a deal for that it will take a min to remember what it is LDAP maybe or something --- someone on here will know, but what it does is verifies that u are cleared on the primary site and then the handoff is cleared. what i dont know is how tiki then determines ur level on the tiki from handoff. its like openid i guess is how i relate it in my mind
say you signed in on wordpress or whatever, you then click ur tiki link. the verification happens through that process
kstingel: I'm tryiing to sort my UI at present ... been looking into the templates to try to redefine my previous ideas to fit tiki ... I have been using Smarty3, so now I'm trying to figure what should live where in tiki's templates
TNRR2012: its similar to signing into google mail. it clears u for all the google stuff and then for other accts and acts like open id
kstingel: my site will register and verify through tiki, so it's reading tiki permissions, rather than sending external permissions to tiki ... I figured going that way was safer
TNRR2012: yeah that stuff is kinda beyond me luciash or laporte or someone like that or someone on here (no one has chimed in hmnn) would be the goto on that.
tightwork: Is the bugs and tickets a tracker on dev.tiki.org ?
TNRR2012: i gotta split for an hour or so. i will talk to u later. welcome aboard. feel free to send an email and i will try to help w/what limited knowledge i have
yup tracker system
ill be back around 2230EST
tightwork: see ya.
kstingel: I'm gonna step away for a bit too ... gonna peruse the tiki libraries and see if I can suss some stuff out
tightwork: imma need to make a bug tracker for my TW. wish list though.. wish this was already a module or plugin
but I guess with tracker you all feel it should be done that way
kstingel: would be nice if the "User Details" tracker was a plugin ... so instead of username, password and Email , registration captured first and last names too ....

chibaguy: Anyone have any ideas about how to have a really simple way to add an image to a wiki page or blog post? How it's done now is great for presenting all the options, but too complex for a lot of people.
Plus, requiring multiple dialogs isn't good.
I'd like to click "add image," get a choose-file dialog, click upload, and it's in the page/post.
Is this possible?
btw, happy Independence Day, fellow Americans. The evolution from monarchy to plutocracy seems to be complete. ;-)
chealer: tightwork: yes it can
hi chibaguy
-: chealer checks Wikipedia
chealer: hehe
chibaguy: hi chealer
chealer: chibaguy: as a Canadian having spent about 15 minutes in the last hour watching news on monarchs and monarchs-to-be, I'm very envious of a differentcracy
chibaguy: I suppose for modern countries, monarchs have only symbolic meaning, don't they?
I'd like an "upload image" wikiplugin that has the upload dialog right in the plugin dialog, and no other options, etc. Keep it really simple. I wonder how hard that'd be to make.
IIRC we had something like this before the file gallery revamp, etc.
chealer: we Canadians don't know much about modern countries
chibaguy: when was the file gallery revamp?
chibaguy: the "Choose or upload an image" tool is close but doesn't automatically insert the syntax
I don't remember we ever had a good way to do this, but then I don't know the editor much
chibaguy: chealer, I mean when (I think) adding an image to wiki pages didn't involve the file galleries. IIRC, a dialog just let you choose and upload an image file directly.
When the file gallery became the default for images, it got more complicated.
(more powerful/flexible, but more complicated)
chealer, where do you see "Choose or upload an image"?
chealer: chibaguy: just right of the IMG plugin
the three images icon
chibaguy: Hmm, that's not on my toolbar.
chealer: chibaguy: the sixth icon on http://doc.tiki.org/tiki-editpage.php?page=Pr%C3%A9-requis%20pour%20installer%20Tiki
s/sixth/seventh/
chibaguy: I see, thanks. Yes, that's helpful, but it'd be good if there was an "insert" button that copied the syntax to the wiki textarea.
I can imagine normal people seeing the image uploaded and then thinking, ok, now what?
chealer: right
chibaguy: It would probably be better if the "Additional info" in that dialog was visible by default. I think maybe it was hidden to "clean up" the page, but maybe the lack of information also causes a problem.
The kind of users I'm thinking about might not recognize the purpose of an "Additional info" button when they want to see some way to "add" or "insert".
Maybe an easy short-term improvement: change text "Additional info" to something like "Information for adding the image to the page".
And then when the syntax options display, show some explicit instruction (something) like "Copy the image code and paste into the editor."
