I did have it set as default, but you dont need to use that "set uncat items edited by user to category x" perm i mentioned earlier with a default group to get them to automatically categorize. I have "categorize structure pages together" and then tiki_p_modify_object_categories, tiki_p_add_object, and tiki_p_remove_object enabled as global permissions, and its now working fine.
