marclaporte: deeku: this is your lucky day
welll
you don't want to store in Tiki?
so not so lucky day then :-)
Tiki9 permits to fetch files from URLs via profiles: http://tikiwiki.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/tikiwiki?view=revision&revision=41711
So you could run a profile to fetch all those files and put in the Tiki file gallery
but I sense that you want a phantom file gallery deeku: Phantom gallery is correct. I have about 2 TB of video which I want tiki to manage permissions for, but the videos can not be stored either in the db or on the web server... marclaporte: http://doc.tiki.org/Content+delivery+network feature won't help either
how many videos? (approx) deeku: I am trying to use tiki for a video on demand service actually and would ideally like to get one of the gurus here to do it on contract but no one seems to be interested so far.
1400 videos marclaporte: video on demand: sounds like a Jonny B thing ;-) http://tiki.org/UserPagejonnybradley deeku: wrote to him yesterday...
Rackspace CDN has a TempURL feature whicgh could help. marclaporte: Maybe you could have a bunch of wiki pages with links and use http://doc.tiki.org/PluginGroup and page permissions to hide the links? deeku: http://docs.rackspace.com/files/api/v1/cf-devguide/content/Create_TempURL-d1a444.html
I am now trying to figure out how best to call the Rackspace Cloud Files REST services from tiki marclaporte: For payments, and showing content to certain groups, you could use: http://doc.tiki.org/Payment#Membership_Management deeku: Yes, I was planning to use this. marclaporte: Please see: http://aws.amazon.com/about-aws/whats-new/2012/05/13/amazon-cloudfront-now-supports-dynamic-content/ deeku: But the client wants a 'cyber wallet' from whch money is deducted every time a video is watched. marclaporte: So then, you want: http://doc.tiki.org/Tiki+User+Credits deeku: thanks, will see t but video delivery was the easy part - see http://privatead.net.in/video/index.htm
User Credits would work too.
I am so excited, tiki has 99% of the features for a video on demand service alreay built in. marclaporte: What format are the videos in? What is used for streaming? deeku: the videos are in mp4, though we are not particular. Flowplayer is current used for streaming marclaporte: Did you look into/consider Kaltura? RobertPlummer: marclaporte: I'm not around too much right now, but wondering if you have looked at the jison parser at all, think it is in beta yet?
Since my last commit that is. marclaporte: RobertPlummer: I will svn up now deeku: yes, Kaltura is being considered but we have most of it working without it too. marclaporte: deeku: I find it very motivating that Tiki has 99% of the features you need! RobertPlummer: If we can find like 1 bug a day, or even every couple days, it takes about 10-20 minutes at most to fix them, pretty soon we will have a robust flexible parser. deeku: the concern with Kaltura is that it might limit scalibility - with Rackspace Cloud Files (and their specially crafted streaming URL) the entire service could run off tiki with the heavy lifting left to the cloud RobertPlummer: Kaltura runs on the user's system, so it is like reverse cloud, no?
Using the client's pc's is very similar to having a huge server handle all the processing. deeku: Correct, Robert
A bit like Skype :-) RobertPlummer: Or rather a group of servers.
(cloud)
:)
ok, marclaporte I'm out, email me some bugs to chew on. marclaporte: tks RobertPlummer! deeku: Robert, would you be interested in taking over this project? How much would you charge? marclaporte: deeku & Robert : you can negotiate in private :-) RobertPlummer: deeku, robert@tiki.org deeku: yes, we will do that. marclaporte: Deeku: Nelson Ko also has some experience in this area. Which is why/how Tiki Credits was developped deeku: thanks - mail going out now. RobertPlummer: deeku: I will be away for a bit, family time, but probably tomorrow I can get back with you.
thanks guys! deeku: great, look foward to that. marclaporte: So Deeku: How to protect the URLs of the streaming?
Say user A shares with user B? deeku: Protect URLs with
http://docs.rackspace.com/files/api/v1/cf-devguide/content/Create_TempURL-d1a444.html marclaporte: ok, I see deeku: its perfect for what we need marclaporte: deeku: your video is making me hungry. I think I'll get Indian food for dinner. Some nice Vindaloo! :-) deeku: To use this I need to fugire out a way to call the RST api as soon as the visitor selects the video
Wish there was a way to upload that from here marclaporte: deeku: is it intentional that I can't FF the video? deeku: FF: yes - this is ad supported so FF is disabled, you can pause and rewind
new tiki site: http://www.privatead.net.in - is it too ugly? marclaporte: About TempURL (http://docs.rackspace.com/files/api/v1/cf-devguide/content/TempURL-d1a4450.html) This concept exists as: http://doc.tiki.org/Tokens deeku: tokens, yes, but not quite: with tokens the CDN URL of the video will not be hidden. If someone accesses this directly, he will bypass our billing.
However, if tiki were handling the video as part of a file gallery, it would work just fine. marclaporte: right...
Will you make a social site around the videos?
comments, ratings, etc. deeku: yes, that has been planned.
The video content is in a language called Bengali, the regional language in this part of India
the target group is quite small and geographically limited.
social media marketing would help, but 90% of the visitors will be from the five cities in West bengal.
We did a campaign for a similar web service by putting up kiosks outside shopping malls and multiplexes - we got 100,000 registrations in a month. :-) marclaporte: wow!
so there is interest big time!
Thus, you want to scale ;-) deeku: hmm, exactly. marclaporte: http://www.privatead.net.in is OK deeku: thanks marclaporte: page missing: http://www.privatead.net.in/tiki-index.php?page=Contact%20Us deeku: wanted it to lok different but I think we went a bit over the top. It is 42 degrees celcius in the shade here.
Yes, even the about us page and the pricing. The site has not been launched it. marclaporte: ok
bottom logos are not too nice
I would remove them and just keep subtle powered by tiki deeku: ok, will do. marclaporte: Suggest to activate Short URLs deeku: ok. marclaporte: For a long time, I have hoped for content monetization to encourage content creators
I was/an disappointed micro-payments didn't become a big thing deeku: How are you planning to do that?
micro-payments: yes marclaporte: well pretty much like what we discussed earlier. For pay content
via subscription or User Credits, etc.
Ex.: a music band has a site, and you have some free content. More free stuff when you register, and you have private sections for subscribers only
A direct relationship between the artist/creator and the fans/readers/etc. deeku: Yes, but the current trend is that ad networks create a layer of seperation by making it appear easy and lucrative to earn via their services marclaporte: If it adds value, that's great!
But there should be an easy way to do directly deeku: this must change the way app development has changed the marketing strategy for software developers who develop for mobile devices.
Easy way to do it directly - tiki supports banners but somehow this has not been highlightd in this context marclaporte: Ever heard of Khan Academy? deeku: one of the slants tiki can take is to make managing members / customers / relations (as part of the CRM features?) oriented towards content monitisation
Salman Khan - fantastic! marclaporte: Right! :-)
Tiki10 will have a new ScreenCast feature. You can see sneak peak here: http://tv.tiki.org/tiki-kaltura_video.php?mediaId=1_or0om3n6 deeku: looking... marclaporte: So I could envisage someone having a fremium webinar model with Tiki. And indeed http://doc.tiki.org/Banners could be part of the mix deeku: Doable. marclaporte: By making it easy to make webinars (no special tools, all in the browser), we could imagine a market place of people making teaching material arildb: marclaporte: Can Kaltura show local video file, or even from the FileGallery? ...or is only video at the Kaltura server shown? marclaporte: only video from Kaltura arildb: ok marclaporte: But there is an HTML5 player which could easily be tweaked to do all kinds of things deeku: and if that could be exported to some of the popular LMSs, it will help address an exisitng pain point. marclaporte: deeku: I am working hard for Tiki become a 1st class LMS deeku: ok, but a LMS solution requires the following for education institutions to adopt it:
customization, traning, preset workflows and content (most important)
Corporates with less robust LMSs have made inroads deu to their strength in customization
you will need an army of tiki LMS consultants who can customise if it has to compete as a LMS marclaporte: 1st target is corporate training/e-learning deeku: ok. marclaporte: Content: we are good. Quizzes need some TLC and then, we need better tracking of results (who passed what quiz)
I think traditional school system has tried to do what Ford did for cars
It perhaps was the best approach before, but there are way better ways now deeku: quiz / certification / assessment - see marclaporte: In a typical classroom, part of the students are lost (and ashamed, etc.) deeku: http://cba.indiax.com marclaporte: Another part is bored because things are moving too slowly deeku: I agree marclaporte: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salman_Khan_(educator) Salman Khan has the recipe: http://www.ted.com/talks/salman_khan_let_s_use_video_to_reinvent_education.html deeku: As part of Internet Society ( http://www.isoc.org/ ) we focus on the 'next billion' internet users. marclaporte: So I want to make Tiki become a great platform to make your own  Khan Academy
I can't see anything at http://cba.indiax.com deeku: A lofty goal and tiki has almost everything (again the 99%) required to acheive this.
cba.indiax.com - sorry, wrong URL, forget it. marclaporte: arildb: if you want to show a video from Tiki File Gallery, you can use: http://doc.tiki.org/PluginMediaPlayer arildb: yes deeku: But if a marketplace was added so that the content creator could earn for this efforts, if he wanted to, it would attract a much wider group of people arildb: I got that working for mp4, but swf files still fail to load from the File Gallery marclaporte: deeku: I am on the board of ISOC for my province, but obviously, our concerns are a bit different here :-) deeku: arildb - see http://mhsforgirls.edu.in - it has tiki showing video for all devices in HTML5 with fallback. arildb: It's also a bit annoying that mp4 video is displayed in QuickTime, and QuickTime doesn't have full-screen viewing (in the free version, as I understand).
deeku: checking deeku: Yes, I thought you were. And I seem to recall you know raj too.
wow-small world arildb: deeku: I looked at the video below "MHS Virtual Tour". Is the embedded video mp4 format? not using QuickTime and has fullscreen capability...better deeku: The video is in three different formats and loads according to device used. I would be happy to share the code for this. arildb: so, not using a standard Tiki plugin, or? deeku: {HTML()} arildb: right ... I'd be interested in the code marclaporte: arildb: for swf, use PluginFlash
or is that what you meant? arildb: marclaporte: My comment was that I have been unable to play swf files from the FileGallery. I don't think that's possible with the Flash player either. deeku: arildb - see http://www.calport.com/video.txt arildb: deeku: thanks marclaporte: hmmmm, well I am surprised, and if indeed broken, I predict that this will need to be solved very soon. jCapture natively saves .swf, which will go to the File Gallery (preferably stored in FS) and we need it to play in wiki pages arildb: please try it. I am running Windows. Maybe different on other systems deeku: The browser is also important arildb: I think the usage of jquery media is recent. The scaling of embedded video is also poor. I fixed up the QuickTime scaling, with an ad-hoc like solution
deeku: I tried FF and Opera ..and I think Chrome too deeku: Ie is the troublemaker arildb: didn't try that marclaporte: arildb: I confirm the bug: http://demo.tiki.org/trunk/Flash_from_File_Gallery deeku: arildb - hope it all works out; marc, lovely chatting with you. Got to go, bye all. marclaporte: deeku: take care! arildb: bye
marclaporte: confirmed good. Another problem with swf video is that it doesn't scale. Try linking a swf video and resize the view area. Problem with large video, which doesn't scale doen. marclaporte: Ok, I see
FlowPlayer license is not appropriate for Tiki: http://flowplayer.org/download/ arildb: joined #tikiwiki
marclaporte: flowplayer is nice. Too bad with the license
deeku's solution to use the HTML plugin with the html5 video tag, seems to work well marclaporte: :-)

by default, or is having the mobile profile enough?
Thinking about earlier discussions of CSS frameworks. Seems like to think about that now, you need to think about responsive frameworks (columns rearrange themselves depending on display size, etc.). mose: mobile format won't fit on tablets
responsive is the only way to survive3
