Databases are the same.
They are on the same server.
Yes, one thinks javascript is on, the other thinks it is off.
I have honestly never had this issue, what do you guys think? Tiki|bot: New Commit: amette committed r43180 to the Tiki SVN, changing 2 files - http://tikiwiki.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/tikiwiki?view=rev&revision=43180 amette: no clue, but if the database is exactly the same, they have the same settings for hostname, cookie-domain, etc. - perhaps something along those lines? RobertPlummer: Ah, maybe.
It looks like nextdev has the same problem.
Somehow javascript is not being loaded.
at least most of it.
I think that option should be removed.
tiki now depends on javascript; amette: which option?
ah, k
yeah, disabling it would just break the tiki, wouldn't it? RobertPlummer: if ($prefs['javascript_enabled'] != 'n') {
like 259 of tiki-setup.php
also the != 'n' looks a bit alarming.
Shouldn't it be == 'y' ? amette: doesn't the reasonable check here depend on the default value?
I mean like the decision for which check is the reasonable one RobertPlummer: I'm not sure what you mean.
It is logical to check it
But the value is not being set right, thus killing tiki.
Where does global $prefs originate? amette: I haven't looked at tiki-setup.php in years (literally), so I don't know for sure, but I thought that if the default is e.g. 'y' then it would make sense to check for != 'y'...
.. no, that doesn't make sense either.
now that I wrote it RobertPlummer: It should always be looking for positive.
Or y
it should never look for n
because n == ''
That line should be "if ($prefs['javascript_enabled'] == 'y') {" amette: even if n == 'n' - as long as y is always set as 'y', it is much more sensible to check for 'y', true RobertPlummer: Exactly
And that is outlined in our creation of prefs. amette: ah, ok, then for sure
would it even fix your issue? RobertPlummer: Found it! amette: :) RobertPlummer: line 303 of setup/prefs.php
'javascript_enabled' => 'n',
Red flag!
Jumping into history, I want to find offender.
Probably a nasty merge amette: there are other prefs that are also set to 'n' RobertPlummer: And that is fine. amette: oh, why? RobertPlummer: But javascript_enabled is a pretty important one to be set to 'y'
Some things are defaulted to being off.
Like sheet amette: I think that has historical reasons when we still tried to live without javascript ;)
but shouldn't they then be '' and the check == 'y' ? RobertPlummer: Yes,
amette: wanna do some code cleanup?
:_
:) amette: I didn't ask because of too much free time... ;)
... but understanding the inner workings of Tiki seemed worth discussing this! :) RobertPlummer: I am back to 2010, and I see it still being set to n
I think this feature should be removed.
Because of how much it is ignored. amette: I hate to say it, but I think you are right....... RobertPlummer: And because tiki needs javascript.
It is an ajax animal. amette: I don't hate saying that because I disagree with you, but because I really liked websites working without javascript.
But nowadays... yeah... I think even the login doesn't really work without javascript any more?! RobertPlummer: It does. amette: ah, k, so that was changed RobertPlummer: Let me rephrase. I think it should be default to 'y' amette: what is the most fundamental thing in Tiki that breaks without JavaScript? RobertPlummer: a simple 1 char change :) amette: :)
yeah, that would be a compromise I could live with quite comfortably. RobertPlummer: trackers, sheet, tons of modules, captcha (I think) -: amette nods RobertPlummer: I just don't know why I have 2 sites and 1 works, the other does not. amette: I wonder why I could use all that stuff... I don't remember ever explicitly switching on javascript.. RobertPlummer: It is linked to think y vs n
I know, I don't even think you can access this feature on the admin panel.
You have to insert it directly into the db. amette: ah, lol
then it should probably be removed completely RobertPlummer: I feel the same, but I know what'll happen on the devel list. amette: or is there some code that recognizes if the browser is capable of js and then sets it accordingly?
hehe RobertPlummer: I don't know. amette: Disable JavaScript (found in features, general)
"Disable JavaScript for testing purposes even if the browser allows it."
so maybe there is some automagic
but the checkbox is not checked here...
... so it shouldn't be 'n'... RobertPlummer: It doesn't seem to matter how I set it, it is being set to 'n'.
I think it might be the filter.
Perhaps with some of the stuff we are doing with spam? amette: I haven't yet wrapped my mind around all the spam stuff... but I don't know how what I understood so far could interfere here. RobertPlummer: Don't they both use the filter? amette: which filter? RobertPlummer: tiki-filter or jitFilter
nm, it is neither of them.
$prefs['disableJavascript'] is overriding itl
lol
we have a disableJavascript pref and a javascript_enabled pref?
a little redundant? amette: a little
disableJavascript is for testing purposes, ok...
... but wouldn't it be enough to just disable javascript then? RobertPlummer: I agree amette: BUT: if the javascript_enabled is some automagic browser recognition (as it is not available in admin panel), then it does make sense again to have an override pref RobertPlummer: Not if it is stupid. amette: lol
apparantly it does needs some bigger changes though to make it less stupid RobertPlummer: So how is it being set to 'y' when it is defined as 'n' in global.php
What is really difficult about this is that I have to debug remotly, if I had it broken locally, I could fix it in a few seconds with phpstrom.
storm amette: yeah, a debugger is a great thing
you can't setup remote debugging? RobertPlummer: phpstorm is so powerful
amette: Have you used it at all? amette: nope, I use vim RobertPlummer: awe man.
We have a free licence for it. amette: I probably can edit waaaayyy faster than you! :) RobertPlummer: lisence
lsl;dfkj amette: free as in beer license - no, thanks

If you can't beat them, join them. amette: that sounds like quite a bastard :D
hrhr RobertPlummer: It has it's moments.
You may be able to edit faster, but I can find the problem quicker.
I guarantee it amette: I agree that my debugging interface is not as slick, but I really like the editor! :) RobertPlummer: Honestly though, I've been using nano quite a bit. amette: I tried Eclipse (with PHPEclipse) years ago and the thing that drove me away from it was the crappy editor. RobertPlummer: I like vim, but I find it very quirky, but they all lack something.
Yea, it is bad.
I urge you thought to download phpstorm, it really is fantastic.
Just try it. The developer team is awesome over there. amette: ok, I'll try it one day when I have my quality time to do things just for fun
so far I'm quite happy with my vim with ctags and my debugger integrated
and you know: in the middle of evil...
... there's always 'vi' ;) RobertPlummer: lol amette: *g* _qP: joined #tikiwiki Jyhem_laptop: polom RobertPlummer, amette amette: moloq Jyhem_laptop Jyhem_laptop: Just read this discussion. I think there is a misunderstanding about the meaning of 'javascript_enabled' -: amette just was about to ask, if you know more... amette: please enlighten us! :) Jyhem_laptop: disableJavascript is a pref, that's right. But 'javascript_enabled' is not a pref (I believe) amette: ok, so we got that right? Jyhem_laptop: 'javascript_enabled' is for trying to detect/test if the browser is javascript-capable amette: alright Jyhem_laptop: So it starts with 'n' and there is some attempt at javascript, which usually works, and then it is set to 'y'
if the javascript detection fails (someone is with lynx or has javascript disabled), it stays to 'n'
does this make sense ? amette: yup, totally
any idea on the initial problem RobertPlummer had? Jyhem_laptop: no, I just remebered looking at this code years ago. No idea if someone broke it, or even what it did in detail :-( amette: yeah, I could imagine (just as Robert) that it got broke while introducing AJAX stuff... Jyhem_laptop: well maybe, ajax is recent, and there are still very few Tiki devs who "get" it. I certainly don't -: amette steps back, too Jyhem_laptop: I don't even understand how the ajax queries are authenticated. Do they carry the php session cookie info? -: amette steps even further back Jyhem_laptop: or does the ajax query reuse the same persistent http connection which got the page transferred? This is all mysterious amette: but that is an interesting question... big potential for security issues there. -: Jyhem_laptop hopes amette has a wall behind him :)
