I can not see the detail of the big commit....
yes, it looks a bit strange but it is only way to preserve the indenting as it should be rendered in htnml, because if smarty code is indented then it adds unwanted whitespace (tabs) in nested smarty conditions which are then reflected in the rendered html

and one other small 'bug': tikiwiki does not recognize my imagemagick installation and does not cache the images. how can i change this? 
i have to tell you: i like tikiwiki. it's the first cms i found which fits my needs

and thanx for the hint with the php module. as i can see i only have php4. seems to be a very old installation
