WhoWhatWhen
btiffinHow many people run tw with PostgreSQL ? I'm forcing myself to learn the ins and outs of pqSQL, so I dumped MySQL and then failed to get the beta 3 (or 2.4) to install. A fetchrow problem in ...libinstal.php (no deets, at home now) [00:00]
***sm- has joined #tikiwiki
sm- is now known as sm--
[00:02]
francknot many people that's for sure
btiffin: support is lacking greatly
we need volunteers to support the PG port
[00:07]
btiffinIs it worth bashing one's way through? We use postgreSQL at work, so I want to move off MySQL. at home too. [00:09]
franckwe had a talk last year about should we drop the DB abstraction and support only mysql? [00:10]
sm--pg port? [00:11]
franckbut I don't think it went further, so as long there are people to work the code, tw could support several dbs
sm--: not a pg port, but you need to adapt the install and upgrade sql scripts
and test that all the queries are working with mysql and pg
so btiffin if you are up to it... get tw working with pg
[00:11]
btiffinHmm, adapting scripts eh? I still count myself a green Tiki, and I've been admin-ing a site for a year now. Hmm. Not complaining, but such a feature rich system just takes time to gain a smallish level of expertise.
franck, I think I might be stubborn enough. I have reason to "get with the pg"
[00:13]
franckindeed [00:14]
sylviegwe need volunteers.... [00:14]
btiffinAnd honestly, I don't get good vibes at what Oracle may do to MySQL advocates. I can't see promoting it being in their self interest [00:15]
franckwell, you do not need to fix much the code, all queries should use the DB abstraction layer, but some sql syntax do not work with PG too
btiffin: mysql has just forked
[00:15]
btiffinsylvieg, I'm tryin' ;) But I'll admit, there is an overwhelming (yet easy in each instance) number of instances of feature code to read through :) [00:16]
franckbtiffin: another reason I found out against mysql, whihc I would hope pg has working, a re-indexing or adding an index to a table may lock the table for hours, till the indexing is finished [00:16]
sylviegso do not complain - if you want it - do it - you are a welcome contributor [00:17]
franckbtiffin: you could start by checking the sql script for install in the db/ directory, make sure it is PG compatible
sylvieg: let him have a hitch first... ;)
we will push him to scratch it
[00:17]
sylvieg:-) [00:19]
btiffinyep agree franck ... it's hard to attack problems with "good intentions", need the itch and sense of discomfort first. [00:19]
franckbtiffin: I would work feature by feature, get the wiki to work with PG
but first get it to install ;)
that will give you some good base, and there is not too much code behind the install
[00:20]
btiffinSounds like a plan. I came in wondering if it was something simple on my end. If it requires a code scan and maybe a debug pass, I'm ok with that *well, I'm ok with pretending I can figure it out* :) [00:25]
sylviegopensource is not free software fitting your need - open source is a way to be able to participate when it does not fit your need [00:27]
btiffinsylvieg, good one. We got into TikiWiki (well, I did) to support OpenCOBOL. So Tiki PHP coding is secondary to that end, but yeah ... nice quotable.
And on a MySQL fork ... YoreSQL? :)

[10:38]
pkdillegary ?
you don't understand ?
[10:47]
chibaguyYes, the audio quality fluctuates a lot.
(yes, I don't understand, I mean, due to not-good audio quality.)
hi, I hear Matt well, but people at the other end of the table are difficult to understand.
"too much css" is a problem that also is created by _relying_ on css for layout, such as in the new forums layout.
The old forum tpl was heavy on table structure, and this was simplified by using css more, but this also increases the number of css selectors.
So it's hard to reduce the size of css files if we also want to use css more for what was formerly done with html tags.
One answer (already in progress) is unifying selectors across features, getting rid of feature-specific classes, etc.
[10:47]
lucichibaguy: these are good points but it is mainly caused by improper introducing of new classes
in tpls
[10:56]
chibaguyTrue [10:57]
lucihaving a class on table or wrapper which holds it should be enough and if necessary put them only on tr or td when necessary to differentiate [10:58]
chibaguyright [10:58]
lucii am pretty sure the number of classes could be reduced if cascading is used more [10:58]
chibaguyAnd, similarly, links in tds.... [10:58]
chibaguy will be away for a short time but will keep stream going so dog doesn't get lonely.... [11:11]

wikitikiinfohi guys !
i whant know how i can make an upgrade next week to version 3.0
i have now the version 1.11 ... very old..
is that easy to do? i dont whant loose ALL MY OLD THINGS..
somewhere awake here??
[13:03]
chibaguyhi wikitikiinfo [13:05]
wikitikiinfohi ! [13:06]
chibaguyYou shouldn't lose any of your old things doing the upgrade.
I'm not sure of the exact upgrade path though.
[13:06]
wikitikiinfothats sounds good
i make for now many groups and other things..
[13:06]
chibaguyBasically you need to copy the new files on top of your current installation....
so new versions of files replace the old ones.
[13:07]
wikitikiinfook [13:07]
chibaguyThen go to tiki-install.php and follow the steps for upgrading the site. [13:08]
wikitikiinfoand when i make my upgrade from the database, the installer make it , or? [13:08]
chibaguy(this will update the database, but won't touch your data.) [13:08]
wikitikiinfook, that sounds very nice [13:08]
chibaguyBut to be safe, you should back up your database. [13:08]
wikitikiinfook, only that? [13:08]
chibaguyDo you have phpMyAdmin at your site? [13:08]
wikitikiinfoyes
i make every day a backup..
[13:08]
chibaguyah, ok. [13:09]
wikitikiinfobut only from the sql file [13:09]
chibaguyHave you made any custom theme files, etc.? [13:09]
wikitikiinfoi use a custom, but not make on myself [13:09]
chibaguyAny custome .tpl files you should have local copies of.
what theme is it?
[13:10]
wikitikiinfouff... i dont know
i use it for the first time, and then forget
[13:10]
chibaguyok. Some themes from 1.10 days may not be compatible with Tiki 3. [13:11]
wikitikiinfowhen i have custom links , i loose that? [13:11]
chibaguyThey are stored in the database, so should be safe. [13:11]
wikitikiinfothats good ! [13:12]
chibaguyBut it's good to do a full database dump, to be safe. [13:12]
wikitikiinfook , thaks.. i think i will save all files and the database, and the i will make an upgrade
maybe all works and is ready to start maybe i must come back to this chat..
[13:12]
chibaguyok. But currently we're at 3.0 beta4. Is that the version you want to upgrade to? [13:14]
wikitikiinfobut all things sound?s that the guys make a good database and the upgrade itself goes secure. ( i hope...)
no
not to the beta
next week comes the 3.0 , or?
[13:14]
chibaguyah, maybe you should wait a few weeks for 3.0 official release.
The time isn't certain yet.
[13:14]

at slideshare, you can tag it tikiwiki, and that's it, (I think)
xavi is wondering if he himself created a tikiwiki account at slideshare
[15:35]
rlopez_actually doing this
wow
so, do you have one account on slideshare?
[15:36]
xaviin fact it should work with any personal account, you upload it to your account, while adding some freetags to it, where you add also tikiwiki tiki3 workspaces, whatever.... [15:38]
rlopez_ok [15:39]
xaviin addition, I'm checking if I did create an account for tikiwiki
(I don't remember, trying nowadays)
[15:39]
rlopez_i will tag the presentation [15:40]
xaviok. And it've just realized that I had not created a tikiwiki account there, so that I'm creating it right now, with the same username (tikiwiki) and password as all the other accounts I created for tikiwiki in other web 2.0 places [15:41]
rlopez_so it's better if i send you the presentation [15:42]
xavirlopez_: as you wish, you can upload to your own account, or to the general tikiwiki account I've just created [15:42]
rlopez_can I email you? [15:42]
xavino, no, hold on (separate screen) [15:42]

lucisomeone made CSS look of tabs in thenews worse than before ??? [16:30]
xaviluci, and by some misterious reason, homepage in doc.tw.o looks awful (custom css from ricks is shown wrong) [16:33]
luciyes, same awfulness on dev.tw.o [16:33]
xaviok [16:33]
lucii think it's not the best solution these graphical boxes
the tabs do not look nice anymore in my thenews local copy
there's extra line visible
:-/

well, maybe i am wrong, it is FF 2 in this linux distro [16:44]

chibaguyFor the layout.css, I was trying to find "best practice" for things like tabs and rboxes, etc. People have worked on each and used slightly different ways. It would be good to settle on one css method for such things. [16:50]

|dthacker|sooooo, what are the chances of pulling off a 1.9 to 3.0 beta4 upgrade :)? [16:53]
orionrobotsFigure out your test cases first.. [16:54]
|dthacker|what fun would that be? :) [16:54]
orionrobotsHave a "test server" somewhere - dont do it on your live box.
Depends what you use it for
[16:54]
chibaguyFor layout.css, it would be great if the theme designer could just indicate the border and background colors, everthing else would be (standardized) in layout.css. [16:55]
orionrobotsI try to keep my uptime pretty tight - apart from announced outages. [16:55]
chibaguyAbout tabs, the cases of
Admin features and Look and Feel are different because one has lots of tabs that often wrap (both columns on and display smaller than 1200px).
So when tabs' bottoms are even with tabcontent top, on a page that has few and non-wrapping tabs, it's great.
But when there are more tabs and they wrap, then one row is 'floating' and not connected to the tab content.
Luci and I discussed this in irc before.
One idea I've tried is to give .tabcontent lots of top padding and give .tabs a negative bottom margin to pull them down into tabcontent. Then sometimes the tabs are down in the colored area of tabcontent...
...but at least they are never floating up above it, disconnected, which I think is worse.
I added a second, lighter line, to give the "front" or "bottom" row of tabs some margin kind of line to sit on, even when down in tabcontent....
... I don't know if this is the extra line luci talked about, though.
Anyway, I'd be happy to see a good solution for all tab cases (few tabs not wrapping and lots of tabs wrapping) and all themes, for layout.css.
chibaguy takes a breath.... ;-)

chibaguyTabs at dev.tw.o in TheNews seem ok to me in FF3. I don't notice an extra line. This theme doesn't use the method I mentioned of positioning tabs farther down into the tabcontent, so there's no extra, light line at tabs bottom for that. [17:23]
