(just to eliminate possibilities)
MacLeod: i tried coelesce, too, and it works there.
also, the behavior is consistent whether a theme option is enabled or not.
i've been trying to find differences btw strasa and tikinewt
is there a page on th.tw.o that talks about the basic components of a theme?
i've been looking at css and templates, and haven't seen any PHP code
luciash: damn, updated db and still get the "Unknown column 'rootCategId' in 'where clause'" on tiki-admin_categories.php?parentId=0
MacLeod: Hm, just noticed that the search_box button works fine in th.tw.o in tikinewt!
What version are you running?
chibaguy: Theme differences should only be CSS. The theme-specific template files (in the bundled themes) are only to put things in different places. Functionality should be the same in all.
tw.o is proposed branch, I think.

MacLeod: i see the help at the bottom of th.tw.o in Tikinewt theme using XP/IEv6
So any ideas where in the files I should be looking for the cause of this anomalous behavior?
***: PrezKennedy has quit IRC ("Going!")
luciash: chibaguy: you mean you have it twice or it loads there and then gets hidden after page load ?
chibaguy: it stays in view, like part of the page.
luciash: hmm, then it's not intended i think
chibaguy: MacLeod, the design is to use layout.css for global behaviors like visibility, etc. If that breaks in a theme, then apparently the theme css overrides layout.css in a bad way.
But this is for standards-conforming browsers.
Does IE6 work ok for other themes, regarding the advanced search help?
MacLeod: chibaguy: Yes, strasa and coelesce perform as expected.
***: PrezKennedy has joined #tikiwiki
MacLeod: chibaguy: tikinewt, oddly enough, doesn't override layout.css at all for shadowbox styling.
chibaguy: No, it shouldn't need to. Actually neither should the other themes.
MacLeod: chibaguy: And strasa doesn't even include layout.css.
chibaguy: Neither does coelesce!
Perhaps the problem is in layout.css.

It's a pretty up to date trunk install.
MacLeod: chibaguy: seems to work fine in tikinewt, although the presentation has changed quite a bit.

***: chealer has quit IRC (Read error: 113 (No route to host))

chibaguy: well, maybe that's a minor problem.
Some of the presentation change at that site is probably configuration differences.
although the cssmenus are a lot nicer in tw4.
A problem at themes.tw.o. is that the default style is intruding into page-specific styles in a nasty way.
(just noticed)
stripmind: Hi all. I've got a problem with my update to 3.1 from 3.0, After the update, I just get blank screens. going to the folder with the tikiwiki in it, I see the web address automatically points to tiki-index.php, but the screen is blank. I tried reverting to my backup (an ftp of the whole tikiwiki folder to my desktop) and I can see some of my formatting, and forums, but not the wiki content....
...Any thoughts?
Is it relevant that I've changed the location of the tikiwiki in my directory structure - would that influence how it interacts with the database?
MacLeod: chibaguy: So other than upgrading to a dev version at this point, where should I probe tikinewt and layout for causes?
stripmind: Or that as I'm looking at it currently, I've got the old tikiwiki in a new folder and the failed upgrade in another?
chibaguy: Use Firefox and firebug add on to identify what CSS selectors are involved with the help popup, and then how they differ between the themes were things work and those where they don't.
stripmind: At my old pages I get 404 and "Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request."
chibaguy: stripmind, the location of your tiki shouldn't matter, as far as the database is concerned.
***: ClaraM has joined #tikiwiki

The process went smoothly, on the install/upgrade screens?
stripmind: I never got to the upgrade/install screens.
I got a blank screen at step 4 of:
http://doc.tikiwiki.org/tiki-index.php?page=Upgrade+3.x+to+3.latest&structure=Documentation
chibaguy: Well, you said 'after the update'. That means just the file uploads?
oh, I see.
***: Max1 has joined #tikiwiki
stripmind: Yeah. After overwriting 3.0 with 3.1
MacLeod: chibaguy: I use the IE Developer Toolbar to identify CSS controls on a page.
chibaguy: (for the record, the problem at themes.tw.o with theme intrusion is due to the custom site header code, which currently puts strasa stuff on every page, even if another theme is active for a specific page.)
Ok, MacLeod, that should do it.
MacLeod: chibaguy: but so far, everything seems to be just shadowbox controls, which don't differ that much.

...and check if the problem is still there.

stripmind: oy. Deleting those .css lines from the db didn't do it either.
luciash: stripmind: can you repeat what is your problem ?
stripmind: I've got a problem with my update to 3.1 from 3.0, After overwriting 3.0 with 3.1 (step 4 of:
http://doc.tikiwiki.org/tiki-index.php?page=Upgrade+3.x+to+3.latest&structure=Documentation, )
I just get blank screens. I never got past deleting the lock file.
Going to the folder with the tikiwiki in it, I see the web address automatically points to tiki-index.php, but the screen is blank (white screen of death?). I tried theme-related solutions - renaming the .css for the style i'm using, deleting contents of templates_c, deleting database entries related to my preferences for the .css of my style.
I tried reverting to my backup (an ftp of the whole tikiwiki folder to my desktop) and with the 3.0 tikiwiki, I can see my style, and forums, but not the wiki content or some modules and menus. In the new install, I get a 'white screen of death' while in the reverted tikiwiki, I get 404 "Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the...
...request." where I used to have wiki pages.
Do I have multiple problems going on at once, now?
Should I try to restore my database from backup? Would that be the next advisable step?
Caarrie: php memory limit?
stripmind: I've done tiki version upgrades a few times, but haven't restored databse from backup before. I've been looking through the .sql and can see that the wiki content is in there. So I'm relieved about that.
Caarrie, how would I know that, or fix it?
Caarrie: >whatis memory_limit
Sug4r: 'memory_limit' could be the most frequently asked question about trouble getting blank pages. The PHP memory_limit should be >= 16M (see your php.ini). You can check it with <?php echo ini_get('memory_limit'); ?> and read more at http://doc.tikiwiki.org/tiki-index.php?page=Requirements+and+Setup&bl#PHP
stripmind: memory limit listed at tiki-phpinfo.php shows 32M
Caarrie: not sure then
wait for someone that knows more to come around
stripmind: seeing it through the reverted tikiwiki, the 3.1 upgraded still shows the white screen of death.
Thanks for the thoughts, Caarrie and Sug4r

stripmind: hi all. I'm still having the same problem as before. reposting the problem:
encountered a problem updating to 3.1 from 3.0, After overwriting 3.0 with 3.1 (step 4 of:
http://doc.tikiwiki.org/tiki-index.php?page=Upgrade+3.x+to+3.latest&structure=Documentation,
I just get blank screens.
In the new install, I get a 'white screen of death' while in the reverted tikiwiki, I get 404 "Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the...
...request." where I used to have wiki pages.
considering that the database might be corrupted in some way, I made a new one, imported my backup .sql, uploaded a fresh 3.1 installation in a new folder, and went through the update installation, directed at the imported backup .sql, only to be back at my same 'white screen of death' after completing the update successfully and entering tiki. Any thoughts on what to try next?
Also, i've got 32M memory limit, so that's not it. perhaps the backup sql is also bad?
trouble?
