themes.tw.o is kind of a low-risk upgrade since it's more of "aftermarket" service than essential info for install, config, etc.
maybe the only downside is if people are looking for theme demos for the current release, it wouldn't be accurate in that sense
otoh, they could see how cool their sites will soon look ;-) (thinking of the shadows on css menus, for one thing).
But theme appearance and compatibility is pretty consistent between tiki 3 and 4, so there won't be a big problem, as a demo site.
no need for a special tiki3 demo, unlike with tiki 2.

Check if db/local.php is OK.  Someone mentioned a problem with that file during an update recently.
I checked db local and updated $db_tiki and $dbversion_tiki, but no improvement.

do you need other perms from other types? like CMS, comments, wiki, or tiki? i've removed most perms from anon that aren't read/view related, but creating a forum topic is something i'd like to keep open for the moment.
fresh install of trunk in another directory at themes.tw.o works, so apparently there's a problem with one or more files in the root directory, so I'll check on that.

well, I don't even have an idea how much code is not db independent
so I have no idea if it's fixable in 2 days
idealy, all was done by me with converting the install sql script
but as the installer itself is not db independent, that won't do it
and god knows how much more code, modules and extensions are not db independent
so the effort would have to a parallel installer.

Hmm.  There's an idea.  Maybe a table of what has been tested would be useful?  Whether in dev.tw.o or in TW code.
There could be a TW function invoked for every TW feature in Admin which would emit "(experimental)" if the feature isn't in the "tested OK" list.
No performance hit because it would only be invoked in the Admin panels...and for whatever stuff is so highly experimental that it needs such a warning at runtime.
I like that idea. 
Such a function would have a companion dev.tw.o/doc.tw.o page with published status of each feature for each version; both code and web list include date and name of person who says it's tested.
Naming the tester encourages people to perform tests so they get to be on the list.
Speaking of tests... as automated testing improves, people should create test scripts whose successful completion are suitable for marking a feature as being functional.  So to get your name on a feature will eventually require writing/updating a test script.
The dev/doc page for the list of features should make clear that a test for DB support is only successful for the other features which are functional under the DB.  Can't mark a DB as functional merely because one can log in using that DB.
automated unit testing or automated usability testing?
dthacker: That definition is left as an exercise for the implementer.  :-)  If one doesn't like what is implemented, they can implement the other testing.
