Dear all: I want to hide all categories in my tiki by default and then have groups that each give permission for a specific folder; how do I do that? I am confused how to set group permissions, global permissions and category permissions. I planned to take away all permissions on a high level and then add them in the specific category perms per group; does that make sense?

well, no perm can be set without reference to a group.
chibaguy: I thought I could just diable on all on a "high" level (i.e. global perms) and then re-enable them on a low level (category perms)
so in that sense 'global' means global for a particular group.
I guess the default is 'disabled' since permissions are granted in a positive way ("can edit", "can view", etc.).
but if, say, Anonymous has perm to view wiki pages, if you grant permission to view regarding Page A to Group A, this means actually that _only_ Group A can see Page A.
so there is an implicit 'only' when granting on a group or object basis. (i think)

Yes, exactly... in my latest experiments my test user was only able to see the category A (i.e. in the cat module), but clicking on it says "access denied"

But this is how it was up to 3.3. Maybe it's changed in 4.0. I haven't had a chance to test it out.

in principle, users should never get an "accessed denied" in Tiki, regarding assigned permissions. (wysiwyca rule).

ah I think your explanation about "enable category for a group means that group only" was my key problem
I tought I had to diable view categories for an upper group, i.e. registered and then reapply the category for the specific group
right. but there's no way to disable, really, other than not granting to begin with.
what I still do not understand is how the group and global perms work together... normally, on objects / cats there is that "Global Perms" applied - is that the sum of all Group Perms the specific user has?
and then I can overwrite this with object / cat perms?

I think global refers to the permission for, say, wiki pages in general for a particular group.

then object-level perms override that.
Group A has (_exclusive_) view perm for Category A. therefore Anonymous can't see Category A.

Author:  Rick Sapir, TikiWiki for Smarties (http://twbasics.keycontent.org)     Maybe they just discontinued . Tested it on a second site too. Think I have to look for somthing different for rating the content.

the colorpowered.com (which also made colorbox) released a rating system but with an sqlite db...which i could anly get running outside of tw.

That is correct, if the files are being stored in the filesystem.  URLs directly to a file are handled by the web server and TW doesn't see the request.
So using database for file uploads allow the permissions to be applied properly?
The only way to reach files in the database is through a program.  But your database configuration has to be able to handle all your uploaded files.

If the files are stored as files, then if you figure out the name of the directory with the files and find the file name then you could bypass TW.

But, as brankom realized, if you block the web server's access to the directory then the only access is through tiki-download_file.php.

The PHP code can access files which it has permission to reach (and it is running with the web server's permissions) but the web server will obey configuration which blocks access to directories.
Hm... Most of the admin menu on left is gone missing now for some reason.

Maybe something is still set in your browser.  Set up a file with that restriction, then put the URL in here and ask some of us to see if we can download it.  Or ask a friend.

I can't login to my new tikiwiki4 install as 'admin' after enabling Wiki + LDAP auth.
I can login as an LDAP user, but am not an admin
can't chagne the admin pass - I see an error on my AD server event viewer log with a failed attempt
any thoughts?

I am in need of some guidance.  I just tried upgrading my tikiwiki through fantastico.  It was running version 2 and the upgrade was to version 3.3.  I'm getting an error that tells me I need to upgrade my database when I try to go to my wiki

The error gives a link to /tiki-install.php but when I click on it, I get another error:  You don't have permission to access /wiki/tiki-install.php on this server
I set permissions on that file to 755 but that hasn't corrected the problem
Anyone know how to get the database upgrade to work?

you don't need shell access necessarily. I use ftp and phpmyadmin.
When I try to update it with the link that tikiwiki gives me, I get an error

If you can't, seems like there's a problem with your server configuration.
anyway, I ftp the files to where I want them on the server, make a database with phpmyadmin, and then use tiki-install.php to populate the database.
When I try to access it in a browser, I get a message that I don't have permission to access it and that a 404 not found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request

Yeah, I think you need to tell the server admin that you can' t access a file that you should be able to access.

many of the other small networks are not using tiki but other softwares (from blogs, to drupal, on of them, to home made simple php scripts)

lol bot,, Here goes. I was able to do a full install all the way to the end and had greens all the way.  After I click on lock, I get "Access denied for user:". Anybody know why I would get this even thou it installed the sql queries? 
the one in tiki? (unlikely as that won';t work either) - i see different include_path settings onside tiki compared to outside
the complete error is: SQLSTATE[00000] [1045] Access denied for user: 'XXXXX@localhost' (Using password: YES)
