I am seeking to create a public wiki, and had been planning on using Mediawiki, however due to some technical issues I am now considering Tiki Wiki. My main concern with Tiki Wiki is that I cannot find any large-scale websites employing this platform, while Mediawiki has proven fast and stable on such projects. how big will your project be? Do you know of any websites employing Tiki Wiki for thousands of pages of wiki content? yes, tiki.org doc.tiki.org as well It will never be as big as Wikipedia but it will hopefully have thousands to tens of thousands of pages of wiki content eventually nothing will be as big as Wikipedia (in 5 years, I may get teased for having said that) (e.g., maybe comparable to wikitravel.org) I've found it difficult to find a detailed comparison between the two platforms for this application. (i.e., a lot of people focus on smaller-scale projects, like internal wikis) I once had 350 000 or 400 000 wiki pages (only page name, no content) The Tiki Wiki site states that Mediawiki is designed for optimal performance... but it does not really elaborate on how Tiki Wiki compares in that area MediaWiki is designed for Wikipedia Tiki is designed as a general purpose application for very diverse needs What would be the issues in recreating Wikipedia with Tiki Wiki? How many visitors per week? Hopefully many My site will be comparable to WebMD, but in a different field I am not worried about tens of thousands of pages The editing will be restricted to a certain class of contributors, so the traffic will be siginificantly less than Wikipedia. We have like 19 000 users on tiki.org It's more a MySQL thing at that level. so traffic is the big question So could Tiki Wiki handle Wikipedia in its current incarnation? absolutely not What is the bottleneck? well, perhaps a small language Wikipedia is in the top-10 sites in the World It takes like 200+ servers (or something crazy like that) to run A lot of the work they do is to tailor to that specific use case I see. Well WebMD has about 20 million visitors per month ok Could a Tiki Wiki based platform handle that scale? yes, but not on one server (99.9% would be read-only visitors) How many servers is tikiwiki.org running on? various *.tiki.org sites are on 3-4 servers Is scaling up with respect to number of servers a problem/ That is the right question how many servers does WebMD need? And then, ask how many servers Tiki would need for a similar load http://support.mozilla.com/ is powered by Tiki Right, I've visited the mozilla site. but I find that the content is very basic Is that not a factor when looking at traffic? if most of the visitors are just reading, data can be cached and then, it can scale well with more servers You will need: http://doc.tiki.org/MySQL+replication and http://doc.tiki.org/Memcached I see. I look forward to the day when this is a problem for my site, but I don't want to make a decision now that will be ultimately limiting and: http://doc.tiki.org/Content+delivery+network I've just seen that Mediawiki is being used for most large-scale wiki sites (e.g., wikitravel, answers.com, wikia) jjkob: brb okay (on phone) No worries, I need to sack out Hopefully I can catch you another time. However, removing that did not help. Brackets look ok. Any idea what it could be? re-polom hi _Gergely, what version ? hi luciash! mine is tw5.1, but the recent changes are not relevant. hi all :-) hi ricks! _Gergely: afaik 5.1 was fine there... i smell something wrong. _Gergely: can u check if the file was modified recently at your server ? heya ricks99 ! using tiki6, i cannot upload images to wiki pages if i am *not* using file gallery :( my file == 5.x hiya luciash & gregely ricks99: can't you choose "use image gallery" instead ? well yeah, but that doesn't really address the problem in 5x we're using img/wiki_up/ just upgraded to tiki6, now cannot add images :( ricks99: i think there was option to "use file galleries for images" in wiki pages or something like that there too so if you uncheck that, it should use the old way it is unchecked. i select the image. click preview or save. but the image is never inserted into the wiki page doh ! then it must be a bug, you win ! :) lol if it works when u use file gals (file gals enabled) then it must be just matter of wrong conditional if somewhere or what did u mean by "i am *not* using file gallery" ? nott storing images in file galleries the option is *unselected* am storing wiki images instead in img/wiki_up so u still use file galleries, just not for wiki pages images, right ? correct on admin: wiki, features tab, the "use file galleries to store pictures" is *not* selected img/wiki_up/ is still writable presumably y can u check if the image is there, just no wiki syntax appearing or both fails ? I get the Upload Picture field on the wiki editor, but Tiki doesnt seem to actually upload the selected file, nor does tiki add the {img} tag ok ah.. .looks like the images *was* uploaded, but just no {img} tag added good catch that sounds like a little regression bug after refactoring the wiki edit UI jonnyb: around ? _Gergely: u should upgrade to 5.3 for security reasons I know. I will do that later. I found out that the issue is with my first tab in tiki-admin-include-look.tpl the theme tab i don't know if the file was modified the first two div I will check soon it is in the 2nd div. which has not changed up to 6.x I have strasa and never touched it {if $prefs.site_style != $a_style} {remarksbox type="note" title="{tr}Note{/tr}}{tr}Theme not saved yet - click "Apply"{/tr}{/remarksbox} {/if} this line is the culprit Note{/tr}} thats the issue should have only a single } the other one is that of the remarkbox 01{tr}Note{/tr}} is invalid and will cause an empty screen there is a " missing there ah, yes, that too odd that no one else has encountered this. what is your tiki version? 5.1, but everyone should have this just tested: only the " was missing it is present in the latest 6.x _Gergely: yep, but what was with the utf-8 character you said before ? that did not make any difference that non-ascii character yep, it is disregarded it seems, so it did not cause any issue ok, i wonder it works for me too do u use some specialty like JS disabled ? it is also present in 6.x no shall I submit these two fixes to 6.x? ah, maybe we who use PHP errors reporting enabled do not get the blank screen :-p two fixes ? yes, to branches/6.x please yeah. 1. strange char 2. missing " hmm, where is the strange character ? line 105 tiki-admin_include_look.php in 6 i don't see it (just empty line) in my vim so presumably safe to remove _Gergely: thanks it is after a if ( !f ) perhaps the line# is different anyway and what about http://dev.tiki.org/tiki-view_tracker_item.php?itemId=3576&trackerId=5&show=view&reloff=4&cant=16&filterfield=54&exactvalue=Gergely&trackerId=5 am I allowed to submit such things? i don't know, it is very sensitive area of code and i don't fully understand it it is about passing the $parse we talked about this one a few days back about the

added the wiki-parser adds the

, but one can turn it off. it is also faster, so I would set it to "n" by default I got to have some sleep now. bye everyone bye _Gergely New Forum Posts: Having difficulty understanding how to read time stamps created by tikiwiki - http://tiki.org/tiki-view_forum_thread.php?forumId=6&comments_parentId=39056
