I wonder why, in tiki-pagehistory.tpl, the table td that contains the buttons for "view", "source". "compare", etc., has the class "button". Because it contains buttons? I don't see the logic there. Lots of Tiki's elements contain buttons but don't have/need that class. I'm faced with rolling back .button to span.button for reasons like that. :-/
I wonder if anyone minds if I change that td class to "button_container".
I've got a hunch nobody styles that td using .button.

well, the only way to prevent people from entering a name that's already been taken is to write something that checks if a name has been set and gives an error if it happens. I think there is only function set_user_preferences in tikilib that does setting of that
maybe if you write a mini-feature to do that check if the feature is enabled.  It won't be very elegant if someone is trying again and again and get error message again and again saying it's all taken

What I've been working on is more about the disambiguation of real names, e.g. John Doe (johndoe) vs John Doe (johndoe2)

you can use the realname syncing feature that I wrote that syncs a specified tracker field in a user tracker to the real name
it is an nice and easy solution. If the user is notified that the previous name was in use, it sounds ok in my case
and then you can simply hide the UI to edit the realname normally
that requires no coding...
it's a bit roundabout though
but if you already have a user tracker for other user info e.g. user profile  then that makes sense

well, it doesn't number right now. The disambiguation is mainly for the selection of users from the autocomplete selector (chich shows real names). It puts the login in brackets right now.

it can be applied t any field type then - but I am not sure if it will work properly on the user pref field
