Simmi: Just being curious, anyone have a clue on next Beta 13 release?
chibaguy: fabricius, are you there (Torsten)?
Simmi: I checked out some Bootsrap themes yesterday - some stonking themes now coming online.
fabricius: hi chibaguy - yes
I am writing an e-mail now ... give me a few minutes please chibaguy
chibaguy: ok
Simmi, do you mean themes in the Tiki package, or other Bootstrap themes?
fabricius: bolow by the way
Simmi: bootsrap themes - commercial ones that you buy
chibaguy: ah
I hope they don't do too much proprietary html, etc. if you want to use them with Tiki.
Simmi: yeah, noted.. dunno until I buy one.
chibaguy: Probably you could do a custom layout_view.tpl if you needed unique divs for layout, plus do CSS additions or changes.
We've been wanting to do a test case - try adapting a commercial theme.
Simmi: Time is not on my side for that depth of implementation.. I've done plenty of template tweaks before only to find that they aren't compatible with a new release. So a bit weary of going down the tpl mod path.
chibaguy: Hopefully Tiki's switch to using Bootstrap should reduce that risk.
Simmi: Yes, it is needed..
chibaguy: The reason I mention template customizing is that most of the Bootstrap themes I've looked at don't use just native Bootstrap - they add divs and so on and new CSS; so that'd have to be replicated in Tiki's tpls to get the same appearance, etc.
But hopefully it can be minimal.
Simmi: Acknowledged.. I look forward to getting back into tiki - it's been a long time away.
13 gives me hope again..
always been a luck number for me >:o
chibaguy: I'm really happy to see the effect of Bootstrap on even our older themes that have been adapted, in Tiki 13. More white space, a cleaner look, etc.
Simmi: yes and more possibilities of insulating your custom theme/design from the underlying codebase. I like that.
chibaguy: yep
Simmi: cibaguy, nice chatting, thx for the encouraging words and I thank you for what you're doing for the theme mods etc.

fabricius: so chibaguy, whazup?
chibaguy: Oh, I was just writing you an email about doc.t.o's design changes.
Basically, I think that heavy almost-black topbar background is way too strong.
fabricius: ok
you just started or nearly finished?
chibaguy: I'll just send the email and you can see what you think.
fabricius: I could walk up the street to the shop for getting some food or so
chibaguy: Well, sure, go ahead and get some food. :-)
I'm going to shower etc and go to sleep..
fabricius: c u then ... by the way: was it you who did not like the gradient in the fixed-top navbar? I removed it and think, indeed this seems better
chibaguy: Yes, thanks about that.
fabricius: and maybe let us chat before you go sleeping!?
chibaguy: um, I don't know if I can hang on. ;-)
fabricius: I'll order a 1/2 chicken across the street ... pick it up later between 2 sentences
chibaguy: basically what I'm thinking about the topbar is something equally light as the original buttons, if you don't want to use them.
fabricius: and 2nd by the way: themes.t.o seems to not import groups anymore via Intertiki - I lost all my admin previleges on the site
you mean the black topbar is too fat?

chibaguy: So either a fairly light background color, or something. But I got feedback from a couple of people for adding a background color, if you noticed how the fivealive-lite options have changed over the last week or so.
fabricius: they have been changing a few times forth and back, yesterday aswell
chibaguy: What I'm saying is, if you don't keep the design changes pretty simple and lightweight, there'll be criticism from people.
heh, about intertiki, when I was logging into doc.t.o, my browser said "waiting for response from themes.tiki.org" which I thought was interesting.
fabricius: what I want to do as ad hoc measurement, is that the appearance of the community sites after upgrading to Tiki13 is not so massively different than before, although using the navbars
chibaguy: No, I think we don't want to keep the appearance of the community sites from before.
fabricius: I am absolutely comfortable to go from there to any different midterm or longterm solution ... any discussion welcome
chibaguy: We could just use the FiveAlive theme, if we wanted the tiki12 appearance. It works fine with bootstrap.
fabricius: my "action" is just a preliminary ad hoc measure, cause the appearance after the initial upgrade is just awful
chibaguy: Hmm, thanks for that. ;-)
fabricius: fivealive header background does not work in all viewports I realised
chibaguy: Well, if it's a bug it can be fixed.
If it's a design decision, probably it's to make the small-device appearance simpler.
fabricius: I think the reason is the way, how the gradient image is made ("hardcoded" png)
chibaguy: Well, the FiveAlive design required some hard graphics choices.
fabricius: and the original fivealive header is not 100% well with the fixed-top navbar ... which I think we should change to, although I do not expect to deside on my own
I like your fivealive-lite in conjuction with bootstrap elements
and your idea to "slimlign", respectively to "lighten" the topbar navbar I like aswell
you just have to know, that at this time (just ad hoc) I did the css changes in admin->lookandfeel->customisation
chibaguy: Well, I think the topbar navbar should be minimal or none in the case when the page-top navbar is used.
I mean as a design element.
just simpler buttons is better, or links, or a very lightweight horizontal element of some kind.
fabricius: I would prepare one or few empty css files at the server, for that we can try out different alternatives - the lookandfeel approach makes collaborating and comparing difficult

fabricius: I think Nelson has server access and could upload for us
chibaguy: I kind of hate to be experimenting with site design on the live site. We are giving people a bad impression of Tiki with trial efforts.
fabricius: and to copare buttons, slim navbars etc, we could use perspectives
chibaguy: Is it possible to use one of the test sites?
fabricius: we could use next.t.o
chibaguy: Yeah, that would be good.
fabricius: we could use a test site, but I would want a dump of the Tiki sites (without user data)
chibaguy: Well, whatever works
I've got to get to sleep, so I'll check back later.
fabricius: I think, the approach of doc.tiki.org could be an acceptable short term solution for the freshly upgraded sites, for not confusing peple and we do the development we are talking about together somewhere else
before you go: any information what changed on themes.t.o?
I want to fix the appearance there aswell ... looking awkward as is right now
and I want to document what exactly I did and do regarding the ad hoc changes for that you and others can recall or revert at any given time ... but despite being admin, I do not even have edit perm on themes.t.o
I'll ask Nelson, but if you have any clue, would be nice to get info
apart from that chibaguy have a good night, sleep well and dream sweet
chibaguy: fabricius, I don't know what you see at the sites that needs to be "fixed", or what looks awkward. I think they look quite nice. I admit the buttons may be a bit of a change from the topbar before, but I was _trying_ for them to be different, not just a remake of FiveAlive.
I don't think they heavy treatment so far at doc.t.o is especially an improvement. I hate to say maybe we need more opinions, because committees collaborating on aesthetic design pretty much always produce mediocre results, especially when the committee members aren't designers by trade.
But maybe more opinions would be a good thing, to ask about the general direction of the design.
By the way, I don't know anything about Intertiki or what might have changed.
I like the lighter look at themes.t.o, just to be clear. As I said, we can reconfigure to use FiveAlive if people want designs with heavy graphics again.
jonnyb: +1 for the light look, always though fivealive was too heavy
keep up the good work chibaguy! :)
chibaguy: thanks, jonnyb. Having said all that, it's not that I don't have a few doubts about details of FiveAlive-lite myself, but I do think mostly small adjustments are needed, not major shifts of design. We can always come up with a "FiveAlive-medium" to cover the middle ground. ;-)
jonnyb: :D
chibaguy: There are actually design aspects of Bootstrap that I didn't touch on yet, like navbar-inverse, which would probably be good to complete for themes to prevent having to right custom css as on doc.t.o now.
Anyway, time to sleep....

fabricius: jonnyb:
jonnyb: r u still here?
jonnyb: hi fabricius
:)
for a little while
fabricius: listen: I do not at all like the idea of buttons or tabs as main horizontal navigation for the Tiki community websites ... we must have kind of marketing-ready and ... ok, I admit that ... slim userfriendly site, not overfreighted etc.
but it must be cool design for endusers, for attracting new designers, for attracting new users admins and desicion makers
the Tiki Community sites are our all main v-cards, representing one of the main tools we are working with and providing services
no point to design some slim tecchie site mainly for power users
said this, I agree, that the existing black topbar (fivealive) and thus as a consequence my preliminary design fix is far too heavy and all that, what you and Gary said
I am looking for a short term preliminary solution, that gives us time to develop - away from the productive sites - some design examples - preferrably by several designers
please have a look here, where I took back away the black navbar and narrowed the fixed-top navbar ... what do you think about that as kind of a preliminary compromise?
http://doc.tiki.org
jonnyb: looks fine to me, and i guess it's likely to be a time of change...
fabricius: this one: http://themes.tiki.org I simply find not acceptable ... might it be slim or not ... from the top, the actual themes site it is just like a skeleton and the buttons are not really recognisable for non-tecchie end-users as navigation ... respectively main-navigation
jonnyb: i think the other menu looks a bit odd though - features, requirements etc - look odd as tabs i think
fabricius: we should take advantage of the switch to bootstrap
yes ... I think tabs and buttons are odd
maybe Gary can come up with a slim menu / navigation idea, which fits for the time been, until a few designers made bootstrap based suggestions
jonnyb: actually i quite like themes.t.o - why do you say it's unnacceptable?
fabricius: because it looks simply like unstructured white space
the site for THEMES - style and templates and there is no real structure, helping new users
you and me, we know Tiki and we simply do not need the design to find things, but we want to attract external people, designers, new users, etc.
for the few projects, I am working in production, I work mainly with different sorts of non-tecchies and I am 100% sure, that nobody of them would get any idea about themes info.
and designers are often not tecchies and if, they mostly do not know Tiki
Im mean ok, the Tiki community might deside to change the policy to something like:
"Tiki is a content management framework, so we go for a slim "undesign" with only text, a few colored minimalistic design elements and a lot of whitespace ... consultants and designers then can provide the individual designs on their websites ..."
this might be an interesting approach, but I do not really do this as the direction we want to go (as community)? what do you think?
jonnyb: i think minimal is good for us, but not too bothered eaither way i'm afraid, happy to go with whatever people think best - we could do with luciash_ involved as well...
but i have to go out now, more tomorrow
fabricius: ok
