New Forum Posts: Data Channel Configuration - http://tiki.org/tiki-view_forum_thread.php?forumId=4&comments_parentId=54652 chibaguy: hi luciash. You're welcome. I wrote up a blog post about it, which might help explain my ideas: http://zukakakina.com/blogpost42-Groundwork-to-implement-FiveAlive-lite-enhancements lindonb: chibaguy: I’ve been using icon links (not buttons) for action icons, both those at the top right of a listing and those in the action column for individual items items in the list
are you using buttons? chibaguy: hi lindonb. I don't really have a set way. By buttons do you mean the png images?
Or do you mean buttons with borders as opposed to just the icon? lindonb: buttons with borders and padding versus just the icon
the buttons take up a lot of space so I have been using just icons for the action items chibaguy: ah, well, I haven't had to do any customizing down to that level. lindonb: ok - just wanted you to know in case you do
i think gezza is doing the same thing chibaguy: I was wondering today if there's a style guide or something about this. Because the blog post page uses buttons at top right, unlike the wiki page. Should it be changed?
(edit blog, edit blog post, watch, etc.) lindonb: i personally think those should just be plain icons and this is what I’ve been doing
not sure that’s been voted on gezza: hi guys lindonb: hi gezza! gezza: i've been working on somekind of a guideline proposal, will upload it soon chibaguy: Do you think there is a trend one way or another on the web in general?
Like are buttons passe? lindonb: i would say the real trend is to have a dropdown list with a cool icon gezza: my aim is to get Tiki to be consistent luciash: hi gezza and lindonb lindonb: instead of lots of icons or buttons chibaguy: hi gezza. lindonb: but we’re not there yet
hi luciash! gezza: I tried to get a dropdown for actions in lists, but it is not appearing well, bootstrap does not do this well outofthebox inside tables -: luciash reading gary's blogpost lindonb: so the trend is to go minimal, which is why icons with no spacing and background looks better to me for these smaller actions gezza: @chibaguy: can you make this page available in the "Themes" menu: https://themes.tiki.org/Icons chibaguy: gezza, do you mean this IRC page? gezza: will upload iconset info and guidelines here if this is the right place chibaguy: Oh, sorry, you mean the Icons page? gezza: yes, there is a main menu at theme.tiki.org
i dont have access to modify it chibaguy: Ok, Under "Themes" menuSection? gezza: yes, maybe after CSS or Templates chibaguy: Ok gezza: thanks! chibaguy: Ok, done. :-) luciash: chibaguy: done reading it... a pity there are comments not open to post for anon
chibaguy: will try to put my thoughts here chibaguy: Ok, thanks, luci. Actually I'll try turning on comments from anon. As long as it doesn't get spammed. luciash: chibaguy: i am still not sure about introducing more templates than necessary, you know, the maintenance thing... also there is an apparent problem with the previously made social layout - the fixed nav bar is hardcoded and one cannot assign new modules in it (at least i was not able to)
chibaguy: cool chibaguy: luciash, I made these templates as maybe a temporary step. If there's a good way to do the job without them, that's fine.
But as I explained, the "Moving headers" layout doesn't really have a new template to maintain. luciash: chibaguy: so i tried and fied the jonny's way - the profile to apply that fixed top bar - and it works with classic layout - the only problem is to remove the duplicate modules which occurs if you have them already there manually
s/fied/fixed/ chibaguy: I need to try the profile still. luciash: at least it is installable now: http://profiles.tiki.org/Bootstrap_navbar
it creates the custom zone and assigns the modules in it as you pointed out in the blog post
it is not perfect yet but when polished and custom module with custom CSS and JS targeted at it can be added I think that could be easy enough for user to install that profile too chibaguy: (Small reverse to the other topic: here's what is difficult about the icon fonts: they don't convey meaning as well as the pngs unless there's a good match. I'm trying to find "profiles" in the admin anchors. :-) ) luciash: chibaguy: ah, I did not quite get that part about the "moving headers" layout
:) chibaguy: Well, it's kind of a strange way, but it works well, I think. luciash: i like the previous blog post too ;-)
yeah, profiles icon is now the pile of boxes chibaguy: heh. Il
I'll add pictures soon.
The meaning comes through after we realize what it is. lindonb: chibaguy: agree on the icon point, we won’t be able tp be as specific with the icons as we used to be
which is why I’ve been adding the tips class to get the quick tooltip chibaguy: I see people posting at the font-awesome website: please add an icon for ____. :-)
Right, tips are essential now.
I just installed the navbar profile, and it's good to see it works well. lindonb: chibaguy: by the way, when I put the main menu (42) as horizontal in the top bar, the dropdowns are hidden chibaguy: I guess somehow the page padding needs to be added to show the content at the top of the page when it's fully scrolled up. luciash: chibaguy: yes, except the missing logo src image ;) chibaguy: a z-index problem? or overflow hidden?
(about the menu dropdowns) luciash: chibaguy: yes, padding for main content is needed (formerly middle?) lindonb: not sure chibaguy: I'll check.
A good point about the templates method is that you can remove the header div, topbar, or whatever, and the body CSS tag lets you have special rules for hiding divs, etc. luciash: about the icons, the most flexible would be using svg icons too, besides of font icons, because you can create svg icon rather easily... but that would add even more complexity to implement it chibaguy: I don't know what the strategy is for dealing with the existing header, etc. when the profile is used. luciash: the strategy is to remove all the previously assigned modules from them manually i guess :-)
so they disappear then chibaguy: I suppose so. luciash: so yes, the template layout method is kind of better if the user wants to maintain the previous layout of modules as a backup instead of need to remove them chibaguy: Or you could use custom CSS rules to hide them. luciash: or for another perspective wolfganga: joined #tikiwiki
Hello luciash: yeah, but then it would cause unnecessary load on the page
hi wolfganga chibaguy: True. wolfganga: Can anyone confirm, that using namespaces, the popupwindow in the toc of structures always shows pagename + namespace? chibaguy: Sorry, I haven't used structures in a while, and never namespaces. luciash: wolfganga: i cannot remember exactly but there were some issues like that iirc -: luciash is not using namespaces currently either chibaguy: lindonb, about the problem with the horizontal menu, is that in any particular layout template? lindonb: chibaguy: it’s happened on a couple of themes and i think on any page
chibaguy: also, correction on icons, the icons at the top right of a wiki page (edit, print, etc.) are now too spaced out for me (they keep changing!) chibaguy: In trunk? lindonb: yes chibaguy: Yes, the icons lost their borders but they still have the padding.
We need a btn-compressed class. ;-)
or condensed
Or just add a rule to reduce the padding in such cases.
I was also thinking they're too spread out. lindonb: that could work too. so far I’ve just been taking out the btn classes and making then pure links or btn-links chibaguy: I see.
But btn has a lot of CSS rules besides padding, so we have to be sure there's no downside in removing it. lindonb: ok, haven’t noticed any issues so far. doing the same thing for individual action items in a list (eg users list, forum list, wiki page list, etc) chibaguy: They seem to lose all their padding, don't they? lindonb: yes chibaguy: Is that good? :-) lindonb: it certainly is in the list tables imo, where they repeat for each item chibaguy: Oh yeah. I was looking at the wiki action icons. lindonb: yes, one could debate for the action items at the top right of a page
but the buttons look really spaced out to me chibaguy: I was thinking reducing the padding from 12px to 6px looks pretty good in that area. lindonb: that could work for the top right icons
would keep it at no padding for the list tables chibaguy: I wonder if there's a pattern that would let us have rules for icon padding, etc.
Kind of how these are shown in different uses: http://fortawesome.github.io/Font-Awesome/examples/
Specifically, http://fortawesome.github.io/Font-Awesome/examples/#bootstrap
It shows different spacing according to use.
Anyway, it's shower time here. I'll be back later. lindonb: yes, that could be helpful to have sizing and style rules. didn’t really see spacing there but maybe that’s built in chibaguy: It seems like it might be a challenge for Tiki because of how the icon syntax is applied by the code. I think the rules would have to be context-specific, so if there's a pattern of where the padding should be 0 vs. where it's 6px or something, the style sheets can take care of it. lindonb: if there’s something that could help in the coding we could look at making those changes as well
given we’re revamping that now anyway MagicFab_: joined #tikiwiki

Is that a bug?
Or did I miss something?
? lindonb: Sam_: I’m not an expert on permissions but there’s been a ton of discussion and work on this since results can be confusing even with no bug. Did you look here: http://doc.tiki.org/Permissions ?
Sam_: also, did you solve your menu issue from yesterday? You can have menus that expand upon mouseover at multiple levels Sam_: Not really. I was discussing with another member about menus and he confirmed the existence of a bug
lindonb: About the permissions thing, the reason why I think there's a bug is because I did this with V13 before, and now it's not working on V12 lindonb: they expand fine for me Sam_: They do expand, but one can't add expandable menus to menu 43. That was the problem
menu 43 was automatically added by the profile community, I suppose lindonb: do you mean the main application menu that installs with the program?
if so, it can be cloned and altered, and the original one hidden Sam_: There's another menu that was installed by a profile I suppose
That was my solution, to clone it. But the menu that was generated by the profile can't have extensions
That was the bug lindonb: so the profile needs to be changed on profiles.tiki.org? Sam_: I don't think so... I think there's inherently a bug... what does the profile have to do with this? Think about it... the profile just generates a menu! lindonb: it’s easy to misconfigure a profile, but t sounds like you’re saying that a menu created exactly per the profile settings works when set up manually Sam_: Yes. I cloned menu 42 and there was no problem with that. lindonb: I think the main application menu is meant to not be altered Sam_: It can't be altered. That is 42. You can only clone it and alter it.
I'm talking about the menu that's generated by the profile
that menu has a problem
although it's just a standard menui lindonb: I think it is intended Sam_: You're missing the point. I'm sorry... please try to understand what I'm saying.
Do you know that the menu you're talking about is menu 42, and I'm talking about 43 that's generated by the profile? lindonb: what profile was it? Sam_: community
lindonb: Could I ask you a question about search capabilities?
Today I think I located another bug in tiki 13.1. So I have a wiki page called "CASPEr experiment", and when I search for "casper" it finds nothing. Is that normal?
lindonb? lindonb: works for me
did you rebuild the index? Sam_: Yes
Would you like that I give you access and try yourself?
I have no problem with that
londonb?
lindonb? lindonb: not sure what your use case is, but have you tried the search_wiki_page module?
it seems to work well fabricius: hi
hi lindonb and Sam_ Sam_: fabricius saw it yesterday
The menu thing
and I guess the search problem too fabricius: yes was strange - untypical
but Sam_ created a new menu manually and that works Sam_: Anyone is welcome to see for themselves fabricius: the community profile genereated menu had strange behaviour
but I think it is sorted enough now - to consider to work on that, the problem should be
a) appearing in either 12.3 or 14
b) reproducable = reproduced on show.tiki.org Sam_: There's still a problem with the search engine. Anyone is, also, welcome to gain credientials and see for themselves fabricius: imho there is no point to fix s.th. like that in 13, if it only appeared once in a development site
yes, search engine is a problem, but I am not sure if it is a Tiki problem
I get no errormessage for non-writable index files lindonb: can’t reproduce the search issue fabricius: I see the configuration axact same as on a site of mine, where search works
ok: searchworks for lindonb -> which version?
again a thing to reproduce in show.tiki.org first lindonb: 12 and trunk, which is what I have readily available fabricius: hey Sam_ I think the last 1 hour nap was quite good for me - feel a bit fresher now
ok, and I have trunk upgrade from at 12 following the svn rolling releases (many svn ups through all versions) -search still working
It can be, that Tiki's search and some setting on the server might be conflicting
what do you think lindonb: this seems to be an issue forour linux guru Frank (refizul here in the chat) - Sam_ you should well desribe the problem to him. He might have an idea, what server setting could cause that. You know Linux well yourself, so it migt be worth a try if he can give you one or another pointer for you to debug the problem
