Do we have a class which forces "nowrap"?
that would be so useful I guess we do. only it's not called "nowrap" :)

fabricius: hmm Jyhem for what you want to use it? I am a bit confused what you mean (concentrated on another issue) - could you explain in a few words pls?
by the way Jyhem, I have a question aswell: I need to allocate the Apache2 document root to /home/user/public_html which is on a seperate partition on a local Ubuntu machine
Tiki|bot: Welcome to the official Tiki Wiki CMS Groupware channel. Please ask your question directly. Don't ask to ask. Someone will reply if and when they know the answer. Welcome again and please stay a while. Thank you!

fabricius: thx Tiki|bot, but I just used the word "question" in sentence ... uhh
Jyhem, I already did read throughout Google results and came quite near, but finally I cannot get it working, that I can install and run CMS in /home/... with having the relevant data completely in /home (including the php files and the databases)
Apache is working and php and mysql is installed
but the change of the document root for the virtual hosts is not working
I think I might cause some error_40 at sme point, but I do not find out where is the blind spot

Jyhem: hmm
do you really need to allocate the Apache2 document root to /home/user/public_html ???
or do you want to access it through the old localhost/~user/ trick ?
or just a virtualhost?
I'm just saying reallocating the Apache2 document root looks overkill and likely to break other apache2 assumptions later (like when you want phpmyadmin as well, etc
fabricius: give me a sec ... on the phone
Jyhem: np
fabricius: back
Jyhem: so, what is the point?
fabricius: localhost/~torsten/piblic_html/blabla needs extra configuration aswell, isn't it?
not working out of the box at my local machine
Apache 2 is working, localhost shows the default apache start page
point1: need to at all access a website to be installed in /home/torsten/public_html/blabla - no matter if with a localhost/~user/ trick
point2: then getting a nice short url for it, like site1.localhost site2.localhost
Jyhem: the public one needs the userdir module
fabricius: what you mean with public one?
and .. you mean I might have forgotten to activate a spefically needed module in apache?
Jyhem: localhost/~torsten/piblic_html/blabla
fabricius: a that is the public one
Jyhem: a2enmod userdir
as root
or sudo a2enmod userdir
That was the old popular config on university servers where each student could have their own personal site
and it would be localhost/~torsten/blabla → /home/torsten/public_html/blabla
fabricius: this: http://localhost/~torsten/public_html/pim/index.html ?
Jyhem: this: http://localhost/~torsten/pim/index.html
if the file is in /home/torsten/public_html/pim/index.html
fabricius: oh my god
Jyhem: don't forget apache2ctl restart
fabricius: so public_html is (for me unknowingly) a default that apache looks for? I just called this folder this way, to have it similar to what I saw in cPanels and other setups ... just for some consistency ... kind of coinsidence or logical thinking
it works Jyhem
I just had to leave the public_html from the url
so that is what public_html is for I guess ;-)
thank you!
I did not know, that I NEED A FOLDER specifically named public_html
Jyhem: That's the fastest simplest way of doing it.
fabricius: so point1 is solved seemlessly
and now the subdomain pim.localhost accessing the same folder or a subfolder of it?
Jyhem: ah, but point 2 looks like another way
fabricius: maybe same folder is enough
Jyhem: I'm not sure point 1 is a step towards point 2
fabricius: with point1 it semms that a huge problem of mine is nearly solved, provided the php and mysql thingi is solved more easily (google results seem to provide hope
Jyhem: About point 2
fabricius: no, but point1 let's me start working, whilst point2 is a nice to have
ok .. listening
Jyhem: Point 2 is another method
First you need pim.torsten.fabricius (or pim.localdomain or whatever domain)
to point to the local machine
that's done in /etc/hosts
fabricius: ok
ahhhh
the subdomain itself must be written here aswell!
Jyhem: Edit /etc/hosts and look for a line starting with 127.0.1.1
and add pim.localdomain in the end
fabricius: I have this: 127.0.0.1 localhost
Jyhem: or create it :
127.0.1.1 pim.localdomain
or
127.0.1.1 pim.local
(shorter)
fabricius: or pim only
??
Jyhem: Then http://pim.local should direct to default apache (again)
or pim only, yes
fabricius: would that work aswell this way:
127.0.1.1 local
127.0.1.2 pim.local
??
Jyhem: I'm wary of domains without dots in them for cookie standards conformity, but in real life, I never had a problem (cookie standards seem largely ignored)
not sure. Usually it's
127.0.1.1 local pim.local pim
you can put however many you like
fabricius: what means, that several ... ahh understand
Jyhem: yes, several synonyms
Is http://pim.local showing default apache ?
fabricius: so I made now
127.0.1.1 local pim.local
restart apache
no joy
no, not showing default apache
Jyhem: it should show the same as http://localhost
fabricius: that is what I understood, but it does not
Jyhem: what does http://127.0.1.1 show ?
fabricius: that is a very good point! => Diese Webseite ist nicht verfügbar.
Jyhem: hmmm, and http://127.0.0.1 ?
fabricius: the apache default statpage
startpage
Jyhem: ok, then edit /etc/hosts, remove line 127.0.1.1 and put everything behind 127.0.0.1 localhost
fabricius: when I do this: 127.0.0.1 localhost local pim.local
pim.local is not working either
Jyhem: 127.0.0.1 localhost pim.local
fabricius: yes
Jyhem: not working?
fabricius: now <=> I changed now from
127.0.0.1 localhost local pim.local
to
127.0.0.1 localhost pim.local
Jyhem: New browser profile or another kind of browser or kill/restart browser
fabricius: and now pim.local is working
Jyhem: ahhhh
good
now we configure a virtual host on apache
fabricius: I guess now I have to go to /etc/apache2
and edit sites-enabled
?
Jyhem: Yes, what is in /etc/apache2/sites-enabled/ now ?
fabricius: 000-default.conf pim.conf
pim.conf seems to be empty (should have some XML inside, but isn't there anymore
oh no, it is XML inside
Jyhem: nevermind, let's create a new /etc/apache2/sites-enabled/010-pim.local.conf
fabricius: ok - but why 010- ??
Jyhem: and put the following in it
010 gets executed after 000-
it's alphabetic order
fabricius: ah ok
so reading ...
Jyhem: the 000-default.conf wants to be first, it seems
<VirtualHost *:80>
ServerAdmin webmaster@localhost
fabricius: done
Jyhem: DocumentRoot /home/torsten/public_html/pim
fabricius: .done
Jyhem: ServerName pim.local
fabricius: done
Jyhem: <Directory />
Options FollowSymLinks
AllowOverride None
</Directory>
<Directory /home/torsten/public_html/pim/ >
fabricius: sure about <Directory /> ??
Jyhem: Options Indexes FollowSymLinks MultiViews
AllowOverride All
Require all granted
</Directory>
Yes
<IfModule mod_dir.c>
DirectoryIndex index.php
</IfModule>
ErrorLog /var/log/apache2/error-pim.log
LogLevel warn
CustomLog /var/log/apache2/pim.log combined
ServerSignature On
</VirtualHost>
That's enough for http. I don't think you want https on your localhost
then
apache2ctl restart
fabricius: what is the difference between 'service apache2 restart' and 'apache2ctl restart' ?
Jyhem: same result
fabricius: ahhhh I am getting now:
Index of /
[ICO] Name Last modified Size Description
[TXT] index.html 2016-02-23 06:14 69
Apache/2.4.7 (Ubuntu) Server at pim.local Port 80
nice one
Jyhem: Ohhh
fabricius: not?
Jyhem: replace DirectoryIndex index.php with DirectoryIndex index.html
pim is just one single html file ???
fabricius: for now
it will be a full Tiki later this evening
Jyhem: anyway, it works.
fabricius: can I do both: index.php and index.html?
Jyhem: Ahh, for a full Tiki, you should put
DirectoryIndex tiki-index.php index.php
or DirectoryIndex tiki-index.php index.php index.html
fabricius: cool - I assumed this ... changing (adding)
Jyhem: so it looks first at tiki-index.php otherwise index.php otherwise index.html otherwise it shows the list and you choose
pretty flexible
fabricius: cool - a template now
Jyhem: note that you have special log files. /var/log/apache2/error-pim.log may be useful later

fabricius: so for php and mysql I think I should not waste your time, but at first try to figure out with my google findings ... or is that something which you can tell me off hand in 5 minutes (guess you have some work to do besides helping a Tiki friend)
Jyhem: also note that method 2 can be done for more urls and they don't care if they are in public_html, you can put them elsewhere
fabricius: do I have to create the logfile by myself or are they created autmatically whilst first writing?
Jyhem: for mysql, I'd advise installing phpmyamin
automatic, due to the config
fabricius: I tried method 2 before, but I did miss to setup /etc/hosts in the correct way
phpmyadmin via aptitude?
Jyhem: yes, easiest
as for php, I'm confident it's already there :)
fabricius: I do not mind to need to access phpmyadmin via standard localhost ... I just need the data - cms software, customisations, uploaded files and databases itself on the /home
Jyhem: why /home ?
fabricius: I do have /home on a different partition than the rest of the syste
m
Jyhem: mysql does not care
if you want a non-standard mysql install which lives in /home, you are on your own
fabricius: I have one swap and two system - one with Lubuntu and one with elementary - and the fourth partition is /home (similar idea as
d: Data in windows ... I can use /home from both Ubuntu versions and keep one Ubuntu safe as working backup AND I can reinstall or upgrade one of both systems without interfering /home at all
keeping data safe and continue working even whe I crashed my usual used OS due to sillyness like exeriments
and asier to backup ALL data independently from OS

fabricius: I was thinking about this since 3 years or so and planned to setup once my new laptop arrives - it is here since nearly 6 month and I did not do it back then before I started working
Jyhem: so the /etc/hosts and /etc/apache2/sites-enabled/ stuff need to be duplicated ?
fabricius: NOW I can setup one Tiki as personal PIM for all my projects and real life issues, time planning, self-structuring
Jyhem: I let you think it over. back ti work
fabricius: hmm I think it would be possible to do this with a cronjob, or some regular backup
but true
THANK YOU !!!
